paragon is a good person
renegade is a complete douche
they both get the job done and some of the renegade actions are actually pretty cool

but you get more people backing you at the end of the third game if you are a paragon and you kind of need got to commit to one or the other because many dialogue options are locked behind a high paragon or renegade score and trying to mix them usually results in just losing out on those prompts all together which can lead to bad outcomes in the story

some renegade options however are more beneficial than paragon

Other than the plot at some points in the series I think it's mostly like a persuasion stat. There's a neat part that you need either max Paragon or Renegade for at the very end of ME1.

In the dialogue trees you won't be able to pick the paragon/renegade options if you don't have enough points in whichever one you want to pick, and the non paragon/renegade options often lead to worse results or simply less dialogue.

I strongly suggest sticking to one side or the other exclusively in the first two games. Due to the way the system works, particularly in ME2, splitting it can make certain events impossible to get the best outcome.

ME3 fixes that issue and you can go mixed.

Lean one way or the other to unlock additional paragon / renegade dialogue wheel options. Scenarios where you get red or blue options, those options can have additional rewards and are sometimes necessary for keeping some notable NPCs alive.

Ideally you pick one and completely ignore the other.

Because in other morality type games theres usually powers/weapons/characters/endings locked behind being good or bad.

So far im not seeing things like this.
