$2 million USD or guaranteed 25% returns in the stock market for life?

You are assigned a magical broker who will control your portfolio and use his abilities to guarantee precisely a 25% return every year. This magical broker will only accept money upon which you have already been taxed, and you will be unable to see what he does so you won't be able to use it to help anyone else.

would take me 14 years to eclipse 2 mil with my current balance in the market. but i would most definitely add more funds to trade if i got a 25% guaranteed return.

25%

With what I currently have in my investment portfolio, I'd have $2 million within 6 years.

And my current portfolio is getting nowhere near a 25% return for the $2 million up front to ever catch up to what the 25% portfolio can do.

I would be a billionaire in 2 decades. So option 2. Exponentiation is no joke and I have a good amount to start with.

I'm not sure why anyone would not take the 25% market...how is this even a question...

I'll take the 2 million because I don't have the money or income to invest in the market.

Well, lots of people are living paycheck to paycheck. If you put away $1000 a month every year, it would take you over 16 years to get to $2 million. Over 22 years to pass the $2 million if you had invested that and received fairly conservative 6% returns. I feel like there's a lot of people for whom the $2 million would make sense.

If you put in $25 a month you'd have a million in 30 years.

I see. That makes sense. I didn't read the rules carefully. Basically, the question is how poor are you compared to $2 million lol.

It depends on how much you initially have to start with though. If you don't have a lot of money to begin with a 25% return isn't going to give you much whereas 2 million is 2 million.

Well, I suppose that's part of it. Of course there's also the issue of money now vs. potentially more money later. I don't think it's necessarily silly to forgo higher future returns to enjoy it more now. Who knows whether we'll even be alive or in good health in 10+/20+/whatever years when 25% returns could make us super rich.

Yeah. It basically comes down to what your current starting point is.

25%/year would get me 2 million after 20 years... if I didn't spend a single cent of what I have left over each month

2 million would get me 5.5 million after 20 years at a 5% interest rate, which I can get easily with GICs

25%. I'd retire today. Live abroad in like Belize or Uruguay or something. Central or south america in low cost of living area without bad crime. Live on like $50k a year for 5 years there. After 5 years find somewhere else to live and budget like $100k a year to live there. Do that like 5 years.

From there, do whatever I want.

An instant 2 million dollars would save me so much money. Pay off my mortgage and my wife's medical debts, and still have 1.8 million left. This would also let me save $1,500 a month pretty easily, which is $18,000 a year in extra cash. I find that far more useful than throwing some money in an account to sit there for 10 years or more before it can really benefit me.
