Been making my way through the series bit by bit from Rorona, and my favorite up until now was Totori. So I still have a ways to go, but god DAMN E&L is just so amazing. I still need to explore the final area Fallen Ruins though, but I'm close! In general the Dusk series has a nice melancholic atmosphere while keeping up the fun SoL aspect, and the music is more amazing than what it already has been. Ayesha was fun but I hated the alchemy system. Hoped it would get better, it never did. E&L improved upon it drastically and it's been a joy crafting things, especially at endgame. And I go on a while about how much I love Escha and Logy as a duo. They're so cute.

I look forward to Shallie, and hopefully I love that one as well. Seeing its opening is actually what got me interested in wanting to play through the series--it's a beautiful one. Saw it years ago and it's always stuck with me despite not getting into Atelier itself yet.

I'll get around to the Dusk trilogy someday. I still haven't started Ayesha even though it's been sitting in my backlog for a while. I'm actually more interested in Shallie due to its soundtrack which I've heard a lot, but I figured I might as well play through the whole trilogy.

What's wrong with Ayesha's alchemy? I only ever played Rorona.

I always did want to try one of those but the closest I got was Mana Khemia which I enjoyed a lot. I never knew where to begin with the Atelier series though.

Actually this topic I think convinced me to try the Dusk trilogy someday soon suddenly hah when TC said melancholic that instantly made me look it up. That seems right up my alley. Seems good to me. I watched a review on youtube of the Atelier Dusk DX Trilogy.

I keep wanting to get into the series, but I hate playing RPGs where the entire gameplay loop revolves around gathering and creating items to advance.

That's what I thought, Alucard but I wound up really liking Mana Khemia and that had the backdrop of a school! Granted geez that was like 15 years ago *sheesh* I still think it could be a bit fun to unwind to a game like this especially in a melancholic setting (there's that word again). Certainly wasn't something I was thinking of 30 minutes ago.

Rorona's/Arland alchemy is nice and simple and the system gets more different as the games go. Ayesha's system was confusing to me until the very end. I understood some stuff but I never felt like I had full understanding and control, everything felt messy. E&L has a similar system but it's changed to a way where it makes sense and I've had the most fun using it compared to previous systems. It's the biggest thing I'm worried about with Shallie now, I haven't looked up what its alchemy system is.

Hey nice! Another person who digs a good dose of melancholy in their media. I think the games go on sale pretty often, keep an eye out.

I sympathize with the feeling of liking a game's aesthetic but feeling confident the actual gameplay won't click. It doesn't help that while these games go on sale, they're never steep enough to be in "I don't think I'll like this but I still want to try" territory.

Saw it was 90 for the bundle on Steam/PS4 which sure it's three games, but I'd rather it be cheaper than that. Didn't seem like any sales were running for the games at the moment. I'll have to keep a look out for that though.

One of my favorite games to play on the Vita (along with Shallie). I loved the entire Dusk series the most out of all the Atelier arcs.

If anyone wants to play them and has a playstation, they are on PS Now (along with the PS3 Disgaea titles)

From what I can see I think the lowest it's been on Steam so far is $60. Not sure how PSN price history compares. For three games though it isn't bad.

If it helps further, these games really can go a long way in terms of how much time you can sink into them vs what you spend. Ayesha I think was around 25h, E&L was 41h. I heard Shallie's length is more like E&L's. And I did NOT do everything. If you're the type that loves challenging optional bosses, mix maxing, and seeing different endings, that's a whole lot more you'll be sinking in.

Was disappointed she was no longer a party member in Shallie so I'd put that as my least favourite of the three

You can start at the first game in any trilogy since each set are self contained stories. I say trilogy because Gramnad (not released in English) and Mana Khemia are duologies, and Arland and Mysterious now have fourth games.

Intriguing answer lol. I'm at the point where these games are getting beefy, length-wise, so I'm taking a break before I tackle Shallie.

I feel like I might as well mention that a couple of Atelier games are having a sale on Steam. I might get that bundle(I think it's $38 for me rather than the $56 I'd pay for both games) of remaining Dusk games even though I still haven't started Ayesha <_<

i got through arland/dusk and the 1st of the mysterious saga so far. if i can break through the 2nd game in the mysterious saga shouldn't have a problem getting the rest done (the 2nd game is more like arland with the time limit) but says it's lenient and can retry with new game plus with some of the gear if screw up.

so far just didn't have enough time to begin something from my drawer (if anything that san andreas game is going to get targeted to play).
