Why is it possessed?

The book makes it seems like the car absorbed the negative energy from the crazy hateful owner and the souls of his wife and kid dying in it. But its kinda hinted that the car was "different" as soon as he got it.

In the movie it appears to be demonic right from the factory.

Is it ever really explained what the deal is with the car? King usually likes to give his entities a decent bit of lore and origin story.

This is all the info King ever gave AFAIK.

They painted it red, which made it evil. All the other Furys were beige, and I don't recall seeing any of them murdering people.

In the book, I feel like it's made fairly clear that the owner's ghost is possessing the car. TVTropes tells me that the main character actually speculates that he used his wife and daughter's death as a sort of blood sacrifice to bind his spirit to it.

The car was showing signs of being haunted before the owner was even dead though. It was able to lure Arnie in right away.

I don't remember that, I thought he just liked the car, but you have presumably read it more recently
than me.

We can probably blame it on Randal Flagg, an evil car seems like the kinda shit he'd do for giggles.
