she tries to dress it up in an air of weird old school feminism that believes transwomen are men attempting to invade female spaces, and i do think that she does to at least some degree believe it. but honestly most of it is shes a rich old liberal who thinks everything beyond her personal purview is a bridge too far, and the backlash has turned her from a run of the mill shitty person into a shitty confrontational person

Honestly? She seems to only hate trans women specifically and has never really said anything about trans men. Of course attacks on gender affirmative care and trans rights impact both demographics but her hatred for trans women is to the point that she doesn't care.

Her hatred for trans women is not explicitly due to them being trans, but because at the end of the day despite what people might believe from her having written male heroes, she hates men. And to her trans women are just men in disguise, not women.

I will give her the benefit of the doubt in that I do believe her hatred for men stems from some fairly deep rooted trauma. I've not read too much into her past or whether or not she's talked very openly about it but I do believe she has likely been sexually assaulted in the past. It's understandable, trauma can fuck us up, but it doesn't excuse the harm. I imagine a lot of why she envisioned (and then later retroactively declared it) many male characters in the wizarding world as gay, is because that made them "safe" men.

Between the trauma likely inflicted on her by men in the past, and her stringent view that trans women are entirely still men, I believe she does firmly and whole heartedly believe the myth that trans women are a serious threat to the safety and well being of cis women. She is of course incredibly wrong, and will lie through her teeth and misrepresent data of all kinds to support this belief, and shit all over persecuted minorities and deprive people of basic human rights because of this belief, but she DOES believe it. It's the core difference between her and a lot of american right wing politicians that say similar shit. They don't actually believe or care if what they are saying is true, it's just fear mongering to rile up their base and establish further control over people.

The thing is, she's had AMPLE opportunity to actually engage with the trans community, actually learn shit, or at the very least... still have her personal beliefs about sex and gender but agree to live and let live. Which, the first few times she ever brought up her views on trans people... is what it sounded like.

But with every bit of push back against what she said, she just doubled down on it, got worse about. She once said that even though she did not agree that transitioning made you actually your newly assigned gender, she would still march with and support the freedoms and writes of trans people. Now when scottish leaders pass legislation protecting trans writes and making transition easier, she actively protests it and declares this an attack on womens' rights. I really don't know where the shift happened, but if she had just been all like "yeah I don't agree but you do you" I think the vast majority of people currently boycotting her would not care.

I know I personally don't care that she has money to live comfortably with and mind her business. I care about providing her with MORE money that we know she uses to support anti trans groups and promote anti trans legislation.

We've really reached the point on CE where the discussion is literally:

Agreeing with all of this. To me, it's quizzical how some people fail to understand that, by obsessing over this superficial mischaracterization of her arguments to attempt to make her look more "threatening" or "dangerous", trying to take her head-on with strawmen, ad lapidem, or padding out every statement with hysteria and pearl-clutching, they only end up reinforcing the framing that their opposing argument is weaker, and that her argument is better thought out. A whole lot worse, obviously, with certain acts that have been done in defense of the cause, like threatening her with rape or death, or with psychological torment of any sort.

The simple reason that she can elaborate on her points more cogently than the vast majority of her noisy Twitter feed, and of even some outlets online, and that she can keep her composure despite the threats, makes her instantly more likable than anyone else for her in-group (non-trans). Which constitutes the majority, and will be the deciding side in this culture war.

Case in point with the blatant application of Godwin's law, or rather... actual defamation laws. Calling someone a "Nazi" works best when the person has killed or hates Jews, or has a clearly defined idealogical affiliation with another self-professed Nazis. It works -- being generous -- at best so-so when the person is being called out for positions like "kids should not transition before a certain age", "only women menstruate", or "do we really want more penises into the women's bathroom".

I'd argue that's the entire reason why she engaged with this person in such an extreme fashion here, and not the hundreds of others who attempted to engage honestly with Rowling's personal beliefs and explain the reality of what those beliefs (and actions) are accomplishing.
