I mean, there are literally superhero worlds where anything is possible. People get tossed into space, get resurrected, and time travel all the time. With all these worlds full of colorful characters, powers, and settings it just seems we shouldnt be seeing the same stories and formulas. Has everyone run out of ideas?

1) The problem is, that you can't have them do things like cure all diseases, or something like that (This may fly in adult comics/novels, but kids comics and movies? No way) -- because people in the real world would consider it insensitive. So, often any genius character you have is ultimately "useless", and it creates a disconnect, in any stories with them involved.
Why is someone with a genius intellect just working on a suit, instead of saving the world in other ways.
e.g. In a world with cybernetic implants (or loads of people capable of producing them using only a microwave, steel and a coffee maker) around every corner, no one would be physically disabled -- this would not fly in today's political climate. They'd say such a movie advocated erasure, for example.

2) Most powers might work well in comics, but won't translate well into the movie-format.

3) Lastly, but probably most importantly -- most studios like to play it safe, so the old formulas that have worked before, will work again, but something new won't especially something experimental.

Well, yeah. Nowadays there is a huge pull between whats actually entertaining and what is going to be considered insensitive.

You mean 5 people on Twitter and a salon article? Ah yes, the melted iceberg of a 'climate'

New ideas are too risky; companies prefer to stick with a formula proven to work and make them loads of money.

Yeah, but how many times can they kill Superman or create another almighty universal threat, yknow? Now with multiverses in each franchise, they can pretty much do whatever they wanted instead of the tried and true. There have probably been tons on revolutionary ideas for characters and comics that have been shut down.
