Ant-Man is only on pace to make $120m over a four day weekend and is receiving middling reviews. Yeah, still plenty of money, but probably can go ahead and call it a disappointment. Plus, critics are no longer pretending to like the MCU. The DC universe is a mess with no one understanding what direction they're even going in. I'm guessing in the next 5-10 years they will lose their grip to something even more sinister... video game adaptations.

How depressing is it that video game adaptations will just replace superhero movies?

The double whammy of The Last of Us and Super Mario Bros. will usher in a new dark age for the film and television mediums as we see terrible adaptations of God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Halo, Fortnite, and so forth poison the world.

Very upsetting for those who cherish quality cinema.

second one made $75m on a standard 3 day weekend. guess 120m over 4 is a slight improvement but i feel like i've seen more ads for this one than i saw for either of the first two. and isn't it supposed to be a big expansion of the universe instead of a smaller scale heist thing or w/e (i don't watch any of this garbage fwiw)?

guardians is ending too, right? are people gonna roll out a ton for eternals 2 or the marvels or whatever? isn't blade on hold since they cant find a director cuz the first one quit?

anyway i'm just saying video game adaptations will overtake superhero movies soon unless its like a spiderman or batman, some major legacy superhero people gave a shit about before 2008.

I think you mean Superman, in December of 1978, that changed everything. As a blockbuster, it was building on the success of films like Star Wars, Jaws, and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

So.... Great Sci-fi.

Those have always been around.

I think disaster/post-apocalyptic movies were big for a while (including, but not limited to, zombies).

Before that, parody movies were huge (until the ____ Movie series killed it). And before that, I remember American sex comedies and stoner comedies were being released almost monthly.

I think the movies being cranked out just aren't quite as hype as the ones leading up to Infinity War. That said, Black Panther 2 made $850 million, doctor strange 2 made $950 million, Thor 4 (which got surprisingly bad word of mouth) made $750 million, and there's Spider-Man: No Way Home which made $1.9 billion.

They may not be making a billion every time, but they're making plenty. I think this phase as a whole just isn't as interesting to audiences as the Infinity saga, but people still go to see them. Some characters pull more money than others, but they're all successful.

there was more variety before marvel movies. there wasn't a single monoculture thing that everyone was devoted to. you went to go see a one-off movie - a drama, rom com, horror thing, thriller, adventure flick - and that was it. we need to retvrn.

Apparently animated movies and comedies. Comedies are virtually dead and more suited for streaming imo, so it's time for Disney to return to the top and overthrow themself

Also a lot less money.

There are still plenty of indie movies and smaller projects coming out. Superhero movies replaced the standard disaster Blockbuster genre more than anything. Independence day, day after tomorrow, 2012, etc.

Do you really want to go back to that?

It was probably the Fantasy & Sci-fi genres. The first MCU movie came out in 2008, but before that was The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, Harry Potter series, Matrix, etc. Everyone was flocking to movie theaters for those movies.

Ant-Man has never had a huge draw, so this isn't really the "sign" that you want it to be.

In fact, that's the best Ant-Man has done so far. The first Ant-Man made $57.2 million on it's opening weekend. Ant-Man 2 made $87 million on it's opening weekend.

Pierrot le Fou is in my top-five all time favorite movies, yet I enjoy the MCU and genuinely love a small handful of movies out of it.

To clarify though, I'm not currently excited for superhero movies; GotG and Winter Soldier got me into the MCU in a big way, so I was definitely pumped for them up through IW and Endgame. And while I wouldn't say I'm excited for video game adaptations, I think it's great that we've finally got a generation of writers / directors treating the material with the bare-minimum love and attention necessary to finally make VG adaptations competently.

There, I took the bait.

well, the mcu movies are passable at best, and most certainly are not cinema, but i would like to address the video game adaptation thing since that is what this thread is really about.

here's the thing - the main draw of a video game is gameplay. that is inherently not translatable to movies/tv. so what you really need for a good adaptation is an ultra narrative driven game to do something convincing, which i think is why last of us is so popular (personally, i would have dropped tlou already if i didn't love tlou2, which has the only good video game story i've ever experienced). but like what is the appeal of a god of war show, which amazon i think is producing? 75% of those games is maiming mythological creatures. you can't do that for an entire episode of tv if its live action, and if you do, you better have the best action choreographers on the planet (which i doubt will happen since tv shows are typically low rent).

on the other hand, you can also take ultra generic bullshit and make it super popular. like i think mario is going to be an absolute smash hit though despite probably just being a generic family animated movie since it has all of the iconic symbols of the mario games, which are obviously a major cultural touchstone. people will enjoy soyfacing during that movie, for sure. and that will lead to more generic family animated movies based on video games, especially in the nintendo universe, which already has the built-in tie-in opportunity with super smash bros. and then we'll probably get a full fledged live action resident evil reboot more similar to the games and assassins creed reboot, or whatever.

it's all very depressing to think about!

A lot of movie genres shifted focus to Netflix and the like. There's not a huge benefit to seeing a comedy or a drama in a theater--I personally like having a full house to laugh along with, but for most people they just want to watch it for free at home. Comedies, dramas, and artsy indie shit make a lot more sense at home.

Big CGI visual spectacles in 3D with booming sound effects and high intensity music make a lot more sense as a theater experience.

I prefer the theater for every kind of movie, but audiences in general don't anymore. There's a reason recent attempts at drama and comedy films have mostly fallen short. It's because those movies get watched at home instead.
