You could lose your old friends and never see them again, they could just move away, you grow up and never see some people you would never spend a day without, you could do something to make someone angry and have them never talk to you again, we live in a world so big that everyone eventually becomes a stranger, your coworkers who were like family to you

Some of those things could pile up on you until you can't take it anymore, and then you're expected to start it all again from scratch when you have nothing left

But that still doesn't mean you can't "mourn" loss just because the loss isn't the result of a death. Mourning is an expression of grief and sorrow. You can mourn outside of bereavement.

No one who isn't a monstrous asshole is going to tell you it's "unacceptable" to mourn the dissolution of a longstanding friendship or romantic coupling
