You ask me, that and being pleased people are upset is what's really sad. An argument can be made if boycotting this game affects trans rights or not, but trans rights are a serious issue right now and not just trivial internet whining.

There are actual laws trying to pass and being passed that would cut off medical care and literally kill people. Its a very unfriendly climate for people to be trans in; in this kind of climate, yeah they paddle as hard as they damn well can in order to not go under. It's hard for someone to go "it's fine, my life isn't actually in danger from trans rights issues". Like a black guy stuck in the deep south seeing a kkk convention, it's hard not steer clear.

tl;dr maybe buy the game if you really want, but people who are against it are thinking about real world issues so maybe don't giggle like McConnell when he thinks about people dying of covid. To avoid sounding like a sociopath.

It feeds into a lot of misconceptions. It's not something that's suddenly going to turn a bunch of supporters into altrighers, but any damage to a cause that's already being battered by the media isn't going to help it. None of them are going to get fired over it. The big Vtuber corporations (Hololive and Nijisanji) have made very big statements not too long ago how they will support their talents over harassment.
