I was under the impression this game was a detective story, though so far I've just been deeply buried in the backhills of the 16th century.

I have a tendency to pick smart/studious traits in role playing games so I tried to mix it up. I've told the other characters that Andreas is a rapscallion who traveled the low countries and sought knowledge of occultism and the heavens, with a back pocket full of Holy Roman legal theory to get himself out of trouble.

The first super interesting section is involving you and a nun leaping onto the pages of different monastic manuscripts, ending on a heretical text that I am trying to bargain with the nun not to destroy - while still obtaining information I want from her. I also trolled about and snuck into a dude's house and found his suspicious cipher, which he later used to hurriedly mark a book.

I have failed to convince her and ended up giving it to her. Idk if maybe I can sneak in and grab it later

I'm kind of getting owned by my own choices so far, now Andreas is complaining he didn't learn Greek lol

I had no idea what kind of game it was going in. I enjoyed the heck out of the narrative though. But then again I like games similar to this, such as, Life is Strange, The Council, The Wolf Among Us etc.

I suppose it could be construed as a detective game. Though detective games tend to conjure up Sherlock Holmes or Poirot to me. I just loved the presentation, very different and absolutely stellar.

I am also now wondering what that Rain detective game is going to be like(in the last Nintendo Direct).

What traits did you give Andreas?

Occultism like you, bookworm, and knows Dutch. I think you get to pick a few more traits later in the game also. Also a background in medicine or herbs.

At a certain point in the story you will have an option to use it :)

And just had a really weird interaction with Matthieu about how I terrified some guy in the library and nobody has seen him since morning hour. Ended with him telling Andreas to "seek God." I guess that happened before the story began

Pentiment is truly an utterly wonderful game.

Easily one of my favourites now.

I made Andreas a lawyer who was good with words and knew Latin iirc

This part unfortunately is a bug, which I encountered too. You'll (potentially) have an incident with Matthieu in the library later but when you talk to him sometimes the game thinks it already happened.

I dont like that the game is forcing me to like to Mathieu about digging this grave

The law background is so bad. It is the dedicated "put your foot in your mouth" button.

Prior Ferenc got executed. Feels like that was way off the and the truth had to do with the nunnery but I never found the time to even talk to them. There was no other murder weapon candidate either.

Oh and I figured out what the Mathieu bug is. I chose not to confront them cuz I didn't want to make it awkward

Damn I know that experience of seeing a kid like Martin after years and it's like just a different person. So surreal, the passage of time.

Ngl I was not expecting or really prepared for the ultimate subject matter of this game. It's not what was presented to me.

So the Martin is a fake. But it doesn't seem like he'd kill Otto to protect his identity but confess to Andreas after some pressure. So the other two suspects seem to be Hanna and Guy so far. Guy did some occult ritual stuff to Otto, but the very fact he did that makes it seem unlikely he was also the murderer. Similarly I doubt he did the ritual to cast doubt on his later direct murder because he would face almost or as bad punishment from that crime of blasphemy. I only have one investigation segment left from the looks of it, which will be spent on either the priest or the miller, and the miller has already cast doubt on Martin in passing so I doubt I'll get something promising out of him. Maybe if I can sneak into the library from the crypt I'll have to check, but again, I doubt it would surface enough because I don't think Guy is the killer. That leaves eavesdropping on confession as my last lead, but that will probably destroy all future trust in Andreas and the evidence won't be admissible if the Duke is who ultimately delivers justice.

The only thing against Hanna's culpability is people saying she's not capable of it, but then again the murder was an indirect form of the platform dropping, a step removed from a murder weapon. And she knows the area w ell, anda motive she expressed direly

Of course, none of th is would have happened if Guy wasn't embezzling so much, surely.

I somehow managed to get through that entire act of the game without even discovering Guy as a suspect. When it came time to choose the killer I only had the option of Hanna or Martin. I guess I'm not a good detective. :(

Guy confessed to Thomas that he was confessing to Thomas about the embezzling to bind Thomas under the seal of confession so that he could not act on his suspicions

OK so I guess all the time I spent investigating was pointless because there's no time during Vespers. Gertrude even disappears from the coven but magically reappears to do the pot shaking bit so I couldn't give Aedoc the broth either. Sorry but unclear time/action limits in games suck. The broth was also the first time in the game you're asked to go pass time elsewhere for

I guess Andreas decided he wanted to die? Those conversations with the widow and confessor didn't quite reach him it seems

After waiting for Mathieu and the other to finish in act I yes. Though that wasn't how I expected it to play out

Question: What was Andreas saying when he went into the fire for you? For me he was talking about how he needs to save the books but I had him with the 'book lover' trait so it made sense. Is that still his reason for going into the fire without this trait or does he say something else?

Yes he still claims they must save as many books as they can, which was a little bit jarring. I wonder if i had the book background like you if it would've felt mode ambiguous as to suicide for me.

It was still pretty clear to me that he was committing suicide, as Claus tried to talk him down and he very deliberately went back into the fire. I guess there's no difference in the dialogue between being a book lover or not.
