Their plan is to just start digging into Ellie's brain and killing her in the process but she's the only person they've found who's immune.

Wouldn't it be more beneficial to keep her alive for testing and then see if her kids are born with the resistance?

yeah said the same thing. I think being able to get her blood and stuff for years would be better in the long run. able to run tests and stuff. it was poorly explained. maybe they knew how to make it but it would cost her brain to do it? I dunno the writing on that part was very bad.

she's lesbian.

it doesn't necessarily mean she wouldn't be willing to have kids, but there's a possibility she wouldn't (tbf, that could also be the case if she was hetero or bi).

oh yea, true.

I think there's also the case that the Fireflies were desperate, and a political win like finding a vaccine would have given them the edge over FEDRA.

In Ellie, the virus, for whatever reason, never "took hold" and (my assumption is) the Fireflies will use her version of the virus to create an "Inactive Virus Vaccine", like the polio shot.

My assumption, for sake of the plot, this particular virus grows in the brain. Could be the reason when the clickers look almost like their brain exploded.

So in order to extract the virus from Ellie, they would have to cut into her brain, thus killing her.

I don't think vaccines work on fungal infections. You need a different treatment for those. Though, I assume the term "vaccine" was being used as a catch all term for a cure it treatment.

Although, correct me if I'm wrong here, but Ellie wasn't immune was she? She was just infected by a strain that didn't take over her system. The "immunity" comes from the fact that she's already actively infected so she can't be infected more.

Fireflies were stupid. People claim Joel killed the world's last hope, while the Fireflies were preparing to literally kill her to create the wrong type of treatment. She can potentially pass along her variant form of cordyceps by bites and such. They absolutely should have studied her and her infection rather than rushing to kill her outright. Test her saliva? Her blood? Her infection was unique, and she needed to be protected until either a cure was made or they exhausted all other options. Instead they went straight for the worst option possible.

Thats the point. It doesnt make sense so you think Joel is right for what he does but theres that thought that even if there was a 1% chance of success wouldnt that be worth it?

Thats how I always looked at it.

They were trying to get results right then. They were gonna take their very best shot at whipping something up and then experiment and study her corpse as much as they could after.

There's studying of e.g. the effects of concussions that can't fully be done without the person having died.

Not the same thing but you can imagine that whatever the "cure" is requires an inspection of her brain that won't be possible with her alive.

Now whether the Fireflies would be able to successfully make use of that is a separate issue.

Sure, what the fireflies were doing was wrong, but that doesn't make Joel right. It makes them both wrong.

Besides, regardless of what you believe, within the bounds of the logic of the game it was outright stated that if they could get the mutated growth from Ellie's brain a vaccine could be made. They needed that growth though and she had to die.

You can come at me about it not making sense, but I'll kindly point out this is a game that features mushroom zombies. The logic and rules of the setting have been established, and within that logic, it is straight up stated the vaccine will 100% be created.

Also, one of the recordings in the game says that Ellie's immunity has already been studied. They know what they need to do, getting to the lab was just how they needed to do it.

This was also my thinking, that youre just led to believe that they did enough research to come to the conclusion that something needed to be extracted from her brain in order to make a cure/vaccine.
