Anyway, I picked up a warpick and I'm kind of digging it. A little too close range in some situations, but it's fast bashing attacks and shield kicking is pleasing to my face. Also explored a bit and found a "boss" that was just a werewolf with a cleaver. I punched his face in and got a talisman! Going from 4 to 1 ring slots is :(

Also found a gank boss in a dark ass cave that was too spooky to retry :(

Not sure how much I should dick around or if I should just move on in the story. Like, if I had dicked around a bunch after tree sentinel it seems I wouldn't have unlocked leveling, so that would have sucked.

You should dick around to the max imo

after being able to level up and getting the ashes, it's worth it to just explore as much as you want.

the only negative is that some of the main bosses feel weaker later on.

To the best of my recollection, that's the extent of what is gated. And even then, it's just gated behind visiting one of two specific sites of grace.

If I remember correctly, I put sixty hours into this game before fighting the first big-name boss. Limgrave has an assload of things to do and find.

His pony's shoulder check has so little windup that you can't cancel out of an attack animation and dodge it, depending on how early in the animation you are. He can seemingly chain into it at any point in his combos if you're at his right front, which is exactly where he wants you to be and he'll be damn sure to contort to high heaven in his movement to get you there.

In phase two his shield bashing moves completely ruins your camera if he is in melee range when he does it and I literally had to uncomfortably play the phase locked off in a claw position to avoid just dying whenever he did it.

Souls games are kind of about stuff feeling like bullshit until you realize you can actually find a way around it. It's probably why I don't really think about that in that context anymore. If something is really fucking me up, I have confidence in From Softwares abilities that it must be something Im doing wrong. Maybe From Soft just groomed me to think that way :0

I believe the should check also only does a little bit of damage, but you were level one with starting equipment so it probably oneshot you lol.
