Read The Final Empire two weeks ago. My first Sanderson.

Read Annihilation last week. Havent seen the movie but I really liked the book. Was able to keep that nice mysterious psychedelic feel without ever getting stupid.

This weekend I started Well of Ascension and am deciding on doing the Southern Reach sequel or starting Murderbot. Ive made a few attempts at Malazan and Wheel of Time and some Mieville and Doctorow over the past few years but just didnt have the mindsetI tried reading fiction over the last few years but just couldnt bring myself to care.

Glad Im finally able to get back into it after maybe 6 years of nonfiction (after uncommonly reading nonfiction before). I do tend to flop around my tastes and media-forms, so this is probably just where Im going for the next year or so.

I might try Wheel of Time. The show was interesting enough...

The first six or so books are good, but it really goes downhill later in the series. I finally stopped reading the series when I got 150 pages into one of the books and still hadn't encountered any of the main characters. (Of which there are many.)

Read some new science fiction. The newer post-capitalism/post-socialism stuff is amazing.

I'd stopped fiction for a while (other than a title here or there), but really should get back to it.

The Southern Reach trilogy is really good, but just be forewarned that Authority is a very different book from Annihilation. Acceptance is closer to Annihilation, but still its own thing. I definitely think the whole trilogy is worth reading, but the second book loses a lot of people.

Murderbot is a really fun series and I blew through it super quick since almost all the books are very short. I think theres a new one coming out this year and Im looking forward to that.

So far Im at 6 books for the year so far and going to finish the seventh in about an hour or two (I read 121 books in 2022, 109 in 2021), but I jump around a lot between fiction and non-fiction and poetry. From literary fiction to genre fiction. From translated works to originally published in English. My to read list is over 120 books long right now and its like a hydra in that it usually only grows in number and rarely shrinks.

I'm currently reading The Mysterious Affair at Styles, the first book of the Hercule Poirot series by Agatha Christie. I don't usually do mysteries very often. I think the last one I read was GK Chesterton's The Innocence of Father Brown.

Before that I read The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents by Terry Pratchett. It was my first book in the Discworld series. It was a fun little romp and I'd like to read more, but there just SOOOO MANY.

And before that was How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe by Charles Yu, which made me go

Is that a good what the hell was that or a bad one? I read Interior Chinatown by Charles Yu and I enjoyed how unique it was, but I havent checked out his other novel yet.

I watched the movie first and man, the ending sequence is VERY different lol I was a bit shocked at how violent it came across in the book. The stinger at the end of the movie also either seems to be a movie addition or maybe it was from the sequels. But I need to get around to reading the second book now.

The movie is fantastic. Why was there a big hoopla over the all female Ghostbusters when Annihilation was right there, just being amazing?
