The Summersville Police Department reports that on Saturday, January 28, 2023, Corporal Steven Mullens was doing DUI patrols when an attempt was made to conduct a traffic stop on a red pickup truck. This vehicle continued to increase its speed in spite of Cpl. Mullens attempts to make the stop. Once it became apparent that the driver was attempting to flee, *the truck broke down* in the Leivsay area on Grassy Creek Road, at which point the suspect operating the vehicle took off into the woods, fleeing on foot. Other officers arrived to the scene and the suspect identified as *Kermit Hammons* was located. Noticing an empty baggy near the suspect, Cpl. Mullens questioned the suspect who advised that he ate the drugs. *During transport to the Nicholas County jail the suspect advised officers that the drugs he had eaten were Fentanyl, and at this time the suspected turned blue and went unconscious.* Transporting officers Patrolman Caruthers and Patrolman Woods quickly administered narcan to the suspect, effectively saving his life. They took off and went against traffic and immediately crashed into another car. Driver and passenger both ate all their heroin and fetanyl.
