It is funny how many racist like the movie. Sans the issue with the shop owner. He expressally said he wasn't racist before hurting a nazi, and even connected with that black guy getting arrested for a peacful protest.

It's a weird movie for sure. It's kind of like Fight Club in that certain people took entirely the wrong message from it. It's a film about the alienation caused by capitalism and lashing at everything around you because you are blind to the real enemy.

Dude is the perfect example of the "white dude who dude everything he was supposed to" and yet the system completely failed him. The "good guys" won the cold war and yet he lost his job. His "traditional" approach to managing his family cost him said family. Because our society is structured the way it is he is alienated and isolated, left adrift in a world he no longer understands.

When confronted by the white supremacist in the shop he rejects the ideology despite and at that point begins to understand what is happening, both to himself and the world around him. You are meant to empathize with the character, but not sympathize with him.

I disagree, that's what you're supposed to think, think he just lost it one day, had enough of it allhowever, as the movie goes on you discover he's not been going to work in months, has a restraining order against him, he's a loose cannon.

It's also a satire on the 80s "action" movie, where all this violence is happening and everyone's "cool" with it, and the police don't respond naturally (like how many 80s movies have scenes where the "hero" shoots 100s of people, and sometimes 100s of cops as well, and he ends up cuddling his wife and making a funny quip at the end) whereas in reality, there would be an eventual Police response to all the shooting, and probably not a happy ending.
