Besides operations to save life, limb or eyesight, should you, at all ages, have say over your body?

The state should be able to wield power about what other people can do to your body, such as FGM. They shouldnt be able to override choices you make as an adult though.

I've always been a major proponent of bodily autonomy. You want to smoke yourself into a vegetative stupor? Go ahead. Have sixteen abortions? Knock yourself out. Jump off a bridge? Why not?

It's not, nor should it ever be, up to the state or anyone else to tell you how to live your life.

The bottom line is a stretch. I understand the sentiment, but it is literally part of the states purpose to determine how it is acceptable to live our lives. Thats how we get rule of law. Be being part of a society you sacrifice certain freedoms (extreme examples being stuff like the freedom to kill people) for certain protections or other freedoms (the freedom to sleep at night without worrying too much about whether youll be murdered in your sleep).

I agree. And thats the basis of a number of laws which are common among most/all countries.

I was only taking issue with the idea that the state has no place telling us how to live our lives, given that its actually part of their role.

You're not quite on the main point.

Those sacrificed freedoms (killing, assault, etc) are freedoms that infringe on bodily autonomy, just on a personal rather than societal level.

They mean issues like suicide, assisted suicide, drug legality, things that ultimately only have physical effects on the person doing it.

Drug legality is a gray area in that regards. Unless the state is providing 'hard' drugs to addicts, letting people freely and wantonly do hard drugs can lead to an increase in crime rates because people are trying to afford their next fix.

In theory, yes, you should be able to do the drugs you want, but without the proper resources to assist those who do that, you'll quickly affect other people's "bodily autonomy"
