Their early work was a little too new wave for my taste. But when The Bends came out in '95, I think they really came into their own, commercially and artistically. The whole album has a clear, crisp sound, and a new sheen of consummate professionalism that really gives the songs a big boost. He's been compared to David Byrne, but I think Thom has a far more bitter, cynical sense of humor. In '97, Thom released this: Ok Computer. Their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Paranoid Android". A song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity and the importance of trends. It's also a personal statement about the band itself.

I've been a big Radiohead fan ever since the release of their 1995 album, The Bends. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on The Bends where Thom Yorke's presence became more apparent. I think Fake Plastic Trees was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding album... Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Greenwood, O'Brien and Selway. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument... In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism.. Take the lyrics to Karma Police. In this song, Thom Yorke addresses the problems of abusive political authority. Creep is the most moving pop song of the 1990s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock... Thom Yorke's solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like Harrowdown Hill and Rabbit in Your Headlights... But I also think Thom Yorke works best within the confines of the group than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Airbag, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

To an extent.

Ok Computer and Hail to the Thief are two of my favorite alt rock albums ever. I would say I also like a good chunk of The Bends and Kid A. Outside of that, it's really a bits and pieces affair. I like one or two songs off of every one of their other albums, but a lot of it just sort of blends together in a dreary soup for me. The same goes for Thom's solo stuff, I like a few tracks a whole lot but I would never just sit down and listen to a full album.

It's hard to choose a favorite among so many great tracks, but (Nice Dream) is one of the best, most powerful songs ever written about self-preservation, dignity. Its universal message crosses all boundaries and instills one with the hope that it's not too late to better ourselves. Since...it's impossible in this world we live in to empathize with others, we can always empathize with ourselves. It's an important message, crucial really. And it's beautifully stated on the album.

When you're listening to Radiohead, just remember that they're not like other bands. Their music is incredibly artistic, almost to the point where you have to be paying complete attention to them to even remotely understand them. I remember listening to a song on Amnesiac (though I can't remember what it was), where I thought a song was absolute bollocks during the listen. Then, I closed my eyes for a second, and all of a sudden the song had an entirely new meaning. It was insane the way Radiohead could just become something so different when you take a look into the music.

Another thing you should note about Radiohead is that it's easy to get a headache listening to them. Not because they're a bad band, but because of how many ideas their music is riddled with and how complex they are. Soon enough your head will fill to the brim and the rest will just sound like noise to you. Just turn it off and give it a listen the next day.

If you don't like the music, you'll definitely at least enjoy reading through the lyrics, and picking apart the song itself and all of the artistic values that go into making it the complexity that it is.

Radiohead rules but their albums before The Bends were too artsy?! You mean Pablo Honey? Huh never heard that described as artsy. It's a very raw rock album with more personal themes rather than observing things from a bigger wordly perspective.

I was expecting the Thom Yorke quote meme there was a bunch of them several years ago

Ironically my brother died in a car accident shortly after Airbag was recorded. He's not an identical twin so I didn't care. Thom Yorke.

I love Radiohead but who the heck ever called Pablo Honey artsy? I think especially Thom Yorke doesn't like the album and even his band mates were trying to fuck up the riffs and yet Creep became a hit.......I got to stop whispering about this.
