But played 5, am I still missing out?

it's probably aged horribly like most gtas but I liked it at the time

Ballad of Gay Tony was legit, hated Lost and Damned, base game was okay I guess if only because Niko carried the story.

I love it, but if you play it for the first time in 2023, and especially after V, it will feel very dated.

It might be the most serious and well-written plot of a GTA game. But that's pretty much all it has going for it, and even then, most people prefer the silly and irreverent style of other GTA games.

I miss being able to shove in 4. You could just push people if you were walking and pressed the punch button, led to some hilarity in pushing people off high ledges.

In 5 they just replaced it with like a running haymaker. Not as funny imo.

like others said, it feels outdated but it has a nice story and some neat little details that add a bit of realism to it.

yup, still a lenghty and worthy game especially with actual single player DLC which hasn't been seen since in rockstar games.

also, hopefully played on PC where you can mod away the cars' atrocious handling.

This. The story, characters, and atmosphere are the best of the series. I feel 4 is closer to Red Dead Redemption 2 than San Andreas. If you don't mind a slower and relatively more grounded game, you'd like it. Also, I feel a lot of the negatives that get brought up a lot are exaggerated. There's some truth to the complaints, but people make them out to be worse than they are.

I also prefer a lot of the gameplay elements to what came before and after. The physics, the driving, the wanted level system, the car damage, the melee fighting, and the shooting. It's not perfect, but I think 4 did them better.

I liked how 5 had a button where you ragdoll when you jump, that was pretty funny. Used to call the cops, then provoke npcs by ragdolling into them just to see what happens. I also liked to ragdoll myself down hills and stairs, funniest shit ever.

I still hold that GTA IV has THE best supporting cast in the entire series, none of the other games even come close. The side characters are what makes the whole story

Oh yeah true the ragdoll button was pretty good lol. Still slightly lower tier than the shove mechanic imo but still good shit.

Tried going back after watching retrospectives on YouTube and it's incredibly dated both in the visual and gameplay department.

Yeah, Packie was cool too. Been at least a decade since I played it and I didn't finish it but I enjoyed the half of the game that I did play, at least outside of the driving.

How do you go and do that? Isn't he one of the better crew members? Or did you just run him over when you encountered him or something?

It's one of the "random" encounters really early in the game, IIRC he's robbing someone and you can help him or help the guy getting robbed. I decided to help the guy getting robbed thinking I'd get something out of it so I killed Packie, not realizing who he was until reading about it a few days later. If you help him rob the guy he can tag along on the heists later and talks about Niko

this to me was the only redeeming quality the game had...it's atmosphere.
