Like the mild outrage when RE7 and RE8 had Ethan as the protagonist because he wasn't Chris or Jill. And I just don't get it because they're all super bland. The exception being Leon in RE4 who has goofy-as-fuck action movie dialogue which is just great.

Granted, I haven't played RE5 or RE6 which I think does flesh them out a bit, but I'm pretty sure those aren't the games that made these characters appeal to people so much.

The best RE character is Barry. I will not be taking questions at this time.

His blandness is the very last thing thats wrong with him. Every single thing that happens to him, he either underreacts to, or completely fails to give any semblence of a human response.

Just "killed" the wife i came to save? Had my hand chopped off? "Eh. Thats fine."

Wife died in a house of horrors and i'm the only survivor? "Pfft, whatever,"

Baby got crystalized and cut into little pieces? "Oh man this is gonna eat up my whole day.."

I don't even really love Leon, I just acknowledge that there are funny lines in RE4.

And "I don't understand why people love these bland characters, but I get why they'd like this one because he's not bland" isn't exactly a hypocritical take.

It's almost like they feel the way you feel about the character you like about other characters or something.

Isn't it weird how people prefer Batman and others prefer Superman? I just can't comprehend it! It's like they have some kind of... personality? Type of thing... yet it differs to mine?

This is such a strange phenomenon.

It is hilarious that no one ever truly dies in RE and yet they still won't touch Steve with as 10 foot pole

I think I've just heard it too much at this point.

I've also never actually played the original RE1, just the remake.

I like Ethan...

People just like to see returning characters. That's it. It's neat.

If we went multiple games without Ethan and he suddenly showed up, people would think it was dope. If Steve Burnside somehow shows up, people would think it was dope. Bill Coen. Dope. Krauser. Dope. Sherry Birkin. Happened in RE6 and leading up to that game I was fucking psyched to figure out what she had been up to.

It's just the nature of a long running series. Returning characters are cool. The longer they have been gone, the cooler it'll be.

Same reason they got upset about the protagonist swap in Prototype 2.

It's not like Alex Mercer was a particularly amazing character, but the people who played through the first game felt attached to him.

When the second game made him a villain and then killed him off, it kind of ruined any goodwill the story had built up. To this day I don't understand why they felt the need to replace him with another character with the same powers randomly.
