Getting into any Monster Hunter is a nightmare. There are way too many tutorial pop-ups and they're way too wordy. Also you'll probably still feel completely lost in a lot of ways after reading them. There's fun to be had, but powering through tutorials, sifting through menus, and figuring out controls is quite a trial.

I've done the tutorial and one other quest.

So far the only thing that sort of seems confusing is upgrading weapons and armor.
The menus for that are just too busy.

World was my first, it was definitely a bit of a commitment to learn but I felt like it was worth it once I got a hang of things. Sank hundreds of hours with friends for most of the game, it helps working with people imo.

Yeah I've also spent hundreds of hours in gen, world, and rise. They're lots of fun, but getting into them is daunting. The games tell you little about weapon controls and systems, but bury you under mountains of text every time a new item farming system opens in the village.

always highly recommend watching a YouTube tutorial on your picked weapon. Rise is better than most but the game definitely doesnt explain anything about combos and certain attacks.

Upgrading and Weapons arent that difficult:

Weapons - just need monster parts to upgrade and its sequential so you can only upgrade to the next weapon in line. You can look up each Monster and youll get a breakdown on what you need to do to get each part.

Armor - basically the same you make armour from monster parts the same as weapons although you dont need a previous armour type you can just make them so long as you have the parts.

Each armour set has skills that apply to your character. The more you have equipped of that skill the higher the level. These help improve your hunts

Upgrading Armour - this is the simplest. Each sphere has point values. The armour levels up when you give it enough points. You get new spheres by accepting small little quests from the Handler. These are usually things like collect 7 mushrooms and are infinite. Just accept ones you like and youll do them pretty quickly while you hunt.

Ya it's dense and it does this weird thing were a npc will tell you what to do then a pop up window will say the same shit right after.

Just stick to the village mission for awhile and it'll hit most of the important shit. Also before upgrading give all the weapons a go. Then once done with village stuff you can look at what you want to upgrade

Probably because the meat of the game is spending spending 30 minutes wailing on a monster that always tries to run away from you after it gets injured enough just so you can NOT get the material you need from it to level up your weapon/armor to the next tier.

I think you're supposed to supplement that boredom with making it a social game you play with other people, which is something I don't like as a game design idea.

Switched to Dual Blades. Did the four 1 Star missions available but no more have popped up.

Upgrading armor is confusing because I already have some armor that I can upgrade but then I can also buy some new stuff but as far as I can tell its the exact same stuff I already have.

The stats might be the same, but the purpose of different armor sets is the skills. Your current set might be the basic one they give you that has skills on it that helps you gather stuff on the field better. Another armor set with the same defence stats might be geared towards dual blade skills, or gunner skills, or tanky skills. Armor is all about the skills.

Keep in mind there are Village Quests and Hub Quests. Village Quests are strictly single player and are thus easier. There is an end point in the Village questline that will be concluded with a credits roll. But this is not even close to the end of the game. After that you will want to start doing Hub Quests to actually progress the story and encounter all the monsters the game has to offer. All Hub Quests can be done either solo or through multiplayer.

The game definitely has an overload of information. But it's great once it all clicks.

You should have gotten an Urgent Quest if you completed the required number of key quests (the quests that have an X icon to the left of their names). So if you did all of them, you should have an Urgent Quest to do.

There are a couple early game armors that can be made with money instead of materials. Kamura and Leather specifically. So maybe that's what is confusing you because they're listed twice in the armor forging menu.

It's Kamura.
Like if I goto upgrade it says Kamura, but when I go to craft the one option is Kamura too, so I am not sure if I need to craft it or already have it.

Urgent quest just popped up after a convo.

You already have Kamura because that's the armor you get at the beginning. If you clicked on Upgrade Armor in the Forge then you'll probably only see Kamura armor because I assume that's the only armor you own right now. Upgrading armor is probably something you want to save for later. Specifically when you come across a monster you're having a tough time beating. It simply raises the defense of whatever piece of armor you're upgrading. Forge Armor is the menu you want to go into to make new armor. But new armor sets won't appear in there until you get the materials needed to craft them. So you probably only have Kamura on that screen as well. After you do the Urgent Quest there will be a new armor you can make.

So am I gonna have to replay mission to kill enough of a specific type of monster to get enough ingredients?
Is there like a free roam mode where you can just go into an area to kill as much as you can?

I fainted on a mission earlier but only cause i had some mega potions but it refused to let me use them for some reason, pissed me off.

There are expedition quests, which let you hunt whatever happens to be in an area and there's no penalty for fainting and no time limit (although each monster will leave the map after enough time has passed). They may not offer as many reward parts as normal quests though, but I'm not super sure.

If you need more parts from a particular monster, it'll probably be easier to repeat its quest or complete another quest where it's a target. There's no guarantee that the monster you're looking for will just happen to be in an expedition.

I traditionally do Solo hunt till I get the kill/capture and then do multiplayer hunt for the parts I need.

free roam does exist as above poster says. You can still get the 3 carves + tail carve but the extra rewards you get at the end of the mission are reduced.

as for Mega Potions are you sure you had them in stock? If you did then likely you were fighting Volvidon (Armadillo type thing with a long tongue). It gives you Stench status effect that prevents potion use. You can use a deodorant to get rid of it. I dont believe any other enemy uses that status

Thanks to the replies already and playing a good 4-5 hours I think I understand the basics. Like I am bad at the game but I get it now.
I am still confused about how the wirebug works in combat but I am sure I can find a youtube video about that.

You have 2 charges of the bug by default.
These are shown at the bottom of the screen. There are actions you can do that use up 1 or 2 charges.
With weapon sheathed:
Use L2 + R2 to web sling like Spiderman
Us L2 + Y to zip straight up

With weapon drawn:
This depends on equipped skills called Switch Skills.
Usually L2 + X or L2 + Y (I think)

If you get hit by a monster or something you can L2 + A to recover and use 1 bug.

There's more to it, but that's the general idea.

I would watch a "getting started on MHR" video, since a lot of tips aren't things the game ever lets you know, like bring Herbal Medicine instead of antidotes so you get a heal along with your poison cure. The game doesn't even start giving you High Potions until High Rank, even though you should be using them as early as possible.

Also definitely watch a weapon tutorial to learn your moveset easier. Movesets change depending on what part of the combo tree you're on, so guides definitely help. There's usually some Bread and Butter combo you mainly use when the monster isn't moving, and shorter combos when it won't sit still.

I definitely wouldnt put that on yourself. Monster Hunter in general seems to explain the bare minimum button combos.

I started with Long Sword and Greatsword in MH World and until I watched a video on best use of the weapons I was getting destroyed. Once I understood the intricacies of each weapon I got increasingly better
