USA Citizens/Nationals: Do you have a passport card?

In 2008, the United States Department of State started issuing passport cards, which are credit card sized passports that allow for land and sea travel within North America only, but not International Air Travel. See here for more information: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Passport_Card

I was wondering how many people actually had one and if you carried it with you as a second form of ID.

I got mine when I renewed my passport, and I like having the card. The passport is too big to take everywhere easily, but its nice to have a second official ID that fits in your wallet. Especially when out of state, someone might not recognize a drivers license, and a passport is a stronger form of ID than a drivers license anyway.

I would be interested in your opinions.

I recently renewed my passport book-only. If I lived right next to Canada or Mexico I could see getting the card but otherwise its not worth the extra cost IMO

Agreed. Can only see a point if you live near border and cross it regularly. I don't so just the regular book.

An American tried to present one of those as ID while buying liquor the other day (I'm in NZ). Since it's not an actual passport, I had to decline the sale.

For context, we are only meant to accept NZ-issued IDs, except for passports which may be from any country.

Yes. I carry it in my wallet. I could pass for Afro-Latino and don't want to give the LAPD another excuse to pull me over. The passport book stays at home unless I'm flying.

I have a book passport, enhanced drivers license and a Native American status card. I pretty much just use my status card to cross over into Canada but sometimes they ask for my license

I mean this kind of makes sense in that everyone in New Zealand would either be a New Zelanader, or a foreigner who had to present a passport to enter. Not sure they would necessarily carry it to the liquor store though.

The Passport Card is as good as the Passport Book for identification and nationality verification though, so Im not sure why a liquor store wouldnt accept it.

Within the countries that recognize it. Over here, it's just a piece of plastic, no different to a foreign driver's licence.

Yea, in So Cal, so TJ just a couple hours away. Also won't need to worry about getting Real ID whenever they require it to fly domestically because the passport card meets the requirement.

I think its just because forgeries are much easier to pass off if the person verifying whether or not it is real isnt used to seeing a real one. The same reason a lot of UK stores are funny about taking 50 notes.

Got both the book and card. Figured I'd get the card as I plan to go to Canada a few times and live relativly close to the border, plus I can use it for flying domestically without having to go through the extra steps of updating my license to be RealID compliant

Do you have a passport card?

Yes. One more piece of verifiable ID doesn't hurt. In some places, a passport is superior to a regular license on home soil.
