Are they games that you gain for from playing previous games first? Or is it like Final Fantasy, where they are not connected game to game?

Yeah, great game. I enjoyed the story and slowly learning wtf was going on. It didn't top the exploration of 8, but I think that will be hard to beat

They are loosely connected in that it's the same main character but the stories are very separated. Sorta like an episodic adventure where each game he's in x island or country helping out y people. It's not really an ongoing narrative though. They just make small callbacks

Although in 8 it did feel like they wanted to give you the impression that it might possibly all be building to something, since tales of his adventure have reach Romn and the empire has now taken an interest in Adol.

That felt a bit like they were trying to do what they're doing with their other series, that trails in the cold sky series.
