If you're ever in the state, take the long drive between San Fran and LA and San Diego and you'll realize just how many poor rural shanty towns exist in that state, populated largely by minorities that can't afford to live in the cities. The nicer suburbs around Sacramento, SD, and LA are red. There are some heavy red areas in the rural parts.
