initially with a no questions asked anonymous buyback program

then with investigations and warrants, and by force if necessary

I don't think guns are 100 % to blame, otherwise we'd hear about mass shootings and murders in the Czech Republic and the like all the time.

they are not 100% to blame, that is true, but the Czech Republic does not compare to the US:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estimated_number_of_civilian_guns_per_capita_by_country

the estimate of civilian firearms per 100 persons in the Czech Republic is literally one tenth of the same statistic for the US.

hunting reserves can have microchipped guns on the premise that you can check out and check back in when you want to go hunting, with software that will disable them if they go out of bounds of the reserve.

and why are you treating having "to ask the government for permission" like it's some outlandish, unprecedented concept? you have to ask the government for permission to a lot of things. to drive on public roads, for instance.

Yeah you have a point, but they have 10 million people compared to the 333 million in the US.

I was more talking about the laws themselves. In the Czech Republic you can still buy assault weapons and conceal carry, but they don't have the same issues with violence.

I think it's more on the social environment in the US then the guns themselves, but I do agree the amount of guns in the US is staggering.

That's not going to fix anything. People will always have illegal guns and murders will still happen with other weapons.

Canada and Mexico have extremely strict gun laws and you don't see that making any differences.
If somone wants a gun, they'll get them whether they're legal or not.

People carry guns because they think their lives are in danger and they carry them with or without a permit.
And whether you think my assertion is ridiculous, it "doesn't matter" cause the people who got to the extent of obtaining a weapon by illegal means do so cause they feel it absolutely essential they need it.
And yes your idea is impratical. You literally stated getting all weapons removed by any means necessary including force. Think real hard why that can go wrong real fast.

If they're illegally carrying then you just do what we already do when people are illegally carrying guns: confiscate and prosecute. Your false dilemma already has a real world solution.

So the buyback program will fail due to both our outrageous gun culture. and the fact that the government will inevitably screw it up. Nobody will turn in a several hundred dollar firearm for $20 and a free sundae.

As for "warrants and by force," good luck. The headlines the next day will be "Thousands dead nationwide in standoffs/shootouts with police and military." And the situation spirals from there.

That's not at all what's being suggested.
It's people don't respect laws to the point that they feel they need a weapon no matter what legal repercussions they face. No one here is advocating for ending all laws

if there were less guns in circulation, people would feel less like their lives are in danger and would feel less of a need to carry a gun. it would be a "virtuous cycle", as it were.

I would say the biggest issue comes from our government birthing street gangs that then produced a culture that glorifies violence.

Followed by a complete lack of care for mental health.

Combining those with your point creates a gun culture magnified by our current political climate, where all these hyper macho dick bags feel the need to be strapped for various reasons, some more valid than others.
