besides gift shops, what is there to do there? Are there rides/attractions? do characters hang out (do they talk?)? Nintendo-themed restaurants? Is it all Mario stuff or are there other Nintendo cameos around?

Anyway, really cool! Would love to visit sometime this year in the fall.

It's not. We've rode multiple rides alone and over and over again with barely any lines. It's great.

It is tall in real life!! There are no characters out rn but Toadstool Cafe was open

In the app they have a preview show where you can reserve a time for a meet and greet with Mario, Luigi and Peach

Ive been to the one in Japan twice now and it looks exactly the same, so thats cool that they got the layout down. Are the rides the same too? Yoshis Great Adventure and Mario Kart?

Plushies, pins, plastic figurines, clothing. The usual. But they also had a power band you could buy that would link to your ticket and there are areas where you can play games for coins, hit power up boxes and coin boxes to gain coins and your coins from the ride are linked. I'm not sure what you can do with the coins. It also doubles as an amiibo, the worker said. It came with 5 different faces (symbols like a crown for Peach, red M for Mario, etc) to represent different characters.

In Japan you can also use the power bands to collect three keys and then use the keys to unlock a dungeon and fight Bowser Jr.

Also, theres six bands to choose from at USJ: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Toad, and Yoshi. If I had to guess, they cut out Daisy in the U.S.

I did see some keys on signs so I wonder if they have it here. I didn't buy the band it was $40 and I'm not super into Mario to spend money like that on plastic waste.

Yeah same, especially since Id basically be paying $40 to stand in line with a bunch of children solely to touch a piece of plastic and hear a little sound effect. I have an acquaintance who bought one, and I guess it saves your coins across visits, but as far as Im aware you cant actually do anything with the coins so that seems fairly pointless. The whole thing seems like a cash grab aimed at children. If youre really into Mario and have got the money, maybe its cool to boop the boxes and feel like him for a brief moment before you have to move on and let the next people boop the box, but its not for me. I also didnt get a wand for the Harry Potter area. It seems like its kinda luck whether it will work or not, and I was able to just vicariously experience it by watching other people activate the wand enabled things.

I'm curious how different the food in the U.S. is vs. Japan. Like, in Nintendo World theres a green shell bun filled with yakisoba and cheese and Im curious as to if they have that same product, or if they changed the filling to adjust to U.S. palettes. They also have a red shell bun filled with spaghetti and cheese that has a ketchup sauce.

Toadstool Cafe had a cheeseburger, a pesto chicken sandwich and Spaghetti with meatballs. They also had a variety of cute desserts but that's about it.
