This joke was funnier when I heard it 40 years ago.

And for the first hundred or so times I heard it after that. Less so for the next hundred.

I mean, if you read the bible, the angels were aliens... No proof... But it's the only way the bible makes any sense... And the painting with UFOs... And how the aliens look... And pretty much everything...

This also makes sense, as well...

Occam's Razor provides an even more believable answer. Namely, humans are really, really good at making shit up.

And self-delusion.

Modern psychology has actually shown us just how easy it is to get the human brain to hallucinate, how common false-memory formation is, and how easy it is to perpetuate mass-hysteria. Even what "type" of aliens people claim to see in recent times can be traced to documented sociological phenomenon - people didn't start to see "little green men" and "flying saucers" until after Ray Palmer's fiction about them became popular (he's also likely the source of "Men in Black"). People didn't start seeing "Greys" until after Close Encounters and Communion came out.

People see what they expect to see. Which is why people in the past saw fairies, or angels and demons, or gods. And why people who go looking for the Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, or the Jersey Devil often tend to "see" them (always just far enough off in the distance), but never find anything resembling evidence.

Sure, it's easy to just equate every folklore or mythological story into "Aliens!" the way the hacks at Ancient Aliens do (though even then they don't get the original story right half the time, because their research team sucks and they're willing to lie to make the facts fit the theory rather than making the theory fit the facts). But that's not really how the universe works.

There may be aliens in the universe. If so, odds are they don't even know we're here, let alone have visited in secret. Or are a constant presence running around and influencing all of human history yet still somehow remaining relatively undetected overall.

Humans are really good at making shit up. It's basically one of our racial bonuses.

I like Dawkin's explanation of alien life. Either it's everywhere or abiogenesis was one of the most staggeringly improbable event in the universe. Can't really speak to intelligent life, though. Some throw out the Drake equation and I guess it's someone convincing, but it does seem a tad... simplistic and pulled out of thin air to really be a great argument. It's more of a thought experiment than an argument. Also it's kind of ambiguous on what people mean by intelligent life. Does it have to be at least as smart as humans or would space crows count? If space crows count then how far down the intelligence ladder can we go?

What if the environment is so hostile that camoflauge and silence is selected for, and anybody who would draw attention is begging for extinction?
