Unless you use a slow HDD, the realm of large capacity SSDs is largely(excuse the pun) too expensive to keep up. Even a 2TB SSD which still costs like $150+ for a name brand one, won't last you too long. If you download GTA V and RDR2 and COD MW2 thats already like a third of the storage taken up lol

I agree that it's becoming too much. If you ask me, players should accept that games don't have to be absolutely realistic or expensive to be of high quality since it's so subjective these days.

can't believe they gave that pitiful low SSD size in the ps5 lmao, 667 usable gigs and then didn't want to unlock the m.2 drive until later on... that 667 gigs goes in a second
I don't think we can take another ballooning game size leap. I saw Mass Effect legendary edition takes up 120 gigs on steam and i removed it from my cart. Don't have that room to spare on steam deck.

it would be nice if we were allowed to choose which install we wanted. i don't want to play every game ever on ultra high, my rig can't even run most of them anyway. it would be nice if i could just install low versions, save a lot of space.

Yea, the mass effect trilogy took up the last 100gb of data on my ps5. And I had to delete a few games just for room to download that.

If cost cutting was a issue they could have just released more expensive versions with higher storage capacities to offset it.

Not just that. For the better part of a decade at least, games haven't been doing much at all in terms of optimizing rendering. They just throw all the geometry on there and demand players have strong enough GPUs.

Back at uni a former colleague of mine who taught 3D programming made a nifty little tool that would observe the GPU memory and show what's stored there, as well as what's rendered. He looked at a lot of AAA games and the conclusion was pretty frustrating. All the optimizations and cool tricks we learned about were completely ignored, they just brute force rendered everything.

I don't have a problem with storage because I don't play bad games. I only have 3TB total but I have 4 RPGs, 3 MMORPGs, and a ton of VNs and platformers installed, and still have plenty of room left. 1.3TB being occupied by my idol video/pic collection I still have no storage issues.

audio can add up to a fair bit if you compress it poorly (or not at all) and you're a game with a a lot of total audio length

having just a variety of voice quips, for an entire cast of characters, can add up fast

One of the most important things I remember learning in school is that having limits can really boost creative thinking. That was more in regards to writing, but I've heard the stories of programmers who came up with some really nice solutions to work around memory limitations. There is no real incentive now with everything being saved to a drive. Don't even need to fit it on a disc, just enough information to start downloading the rest.

i feel like in general devs have moved away from cool easter eggs and stuff in favor of pumping out the latest derivative drivel that their publisher is forcing them to do. Like you can go back to an old game and theres just a certain charm it has, and then you go to a modern game and it just *feels* like everything else that comes out.

I'd attribute this to how much more effort any given thing in a game takes to make nowadays. A silly joke mode/sprite change that takes someone a day to make is one thing, but a silly joke model change that takes artists and programmers and designers multiple days working together to ensure it doesn't break anything else in the extremely complex system games have become... suddenly starts feeling a lot less worthwhile for something 95% of players will never experience

A big part of the problem is that memory prices are fixed by a cartel. They also need to justify selling HDDs, so they keep SSDs in their own category by leaving the price high. Really, HDDs should be completely obsoleted by now. SSDs are cheaper to manufacture in raw terms, they don't have complicated mechanical components, and it should be simpler to add more space. Unfortunately it looks like HDDs are going to stick around as companies are still investing in new techniques for squeezing more space into them like HAMR/MAMR and it wasn't even that long ago when HDDs with SMR tech entered the market.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

It's a lot easier to hand-tweak such small games with tender love and care, but to do the same with the massive epics of today would take forever. If you're counting bytes or even megabytes now then you're setting yourself up for a lot of wasted dev cycles.

They absolutely should not, not yet. When a HDD crashes, chances of recovery are very high. Until SSD drives have similar recovery rates, there's a very good argument for using HDDs for secure storage.

This is definitely part of it, but another part is just the insane pace that publishers demand. There's just no budget, either timewise or moneywise, to do meaningful optimizations. Heck, we see it regularly these days where games on release are a total mess. If they don't have time to even release a product that isn't broken, optimization is way down on the list of priorities.
