or shit I even donated to the Black Lives Matter movement and then you have black people that are still blatant about Asian racism.

so fuck it, I dont care anymore. Everyone for themselves I guess. I dont have some Asian victim complex, had a pretty privileged life, but Im not gonna ignore some blatantly racist shit.

All politics are lame. Basing your life around it pretty much rots your brain. Everyone I know IRL whose personality is based around politics is completely miserable.

I'm kinda on the side of, all politics is identity politics.

But I agree, I think people play too many word games and are lazy in their communication with some of these things. I doubt your friend actually has an issue with Asians, and if you were to press him on it, he'd say "oh, I actually mean xyz"

It's like the whole "argh, all men suck"

Anyway, it's people being hyperbolic unnecessarily.

Some people are actually saying bigoted shit and trying to hide between progressive language, and that shit is annoying as fuck and should be called out

IdPol is the result of our capitalist hellscape pushing hyper-individualism because you're a better consumer when you only care about you and yours.

We are a communal species, we are a social species. We need community. So we make our own with people that identify similarly to us. It's especially important for people from marginalized segments of society.

It's survival in a world that tries to break us. It is fighting against the isolation caused by this shit.

IdPol isn't 'lame' and really most of those who say so are entirely wrapped up in the ideology of the majority. They view those outside of it as a wedge driving people apart, but it's the other way around in reality.

I dislike identity politics. LGBTQ+ people would have it much better if our existence wasn't viewed as a poltical belief you can disagree with. People view us as a pillar of leftism or whatever instead of human beings.

It's a hell of a smart move by the right wing to claim that being gay or Asian or trans is "politics" and then use that as an excuse to drown out conversation about corrupt businsesses/laws/practices/healthcare/immigration/justice system etc

Reminds me of every time a gay guy turns up in a video game or movie and you get a flux of people who are sick of "politics" in media.

But then don't give a shit if the plot is actually entirely about politics but has no minorities in it

Fwiw, pillar of liberalism. Queer politics overlap with leftism a ton, but it's liberal politics that wield us as a tool and not as humans.

Im skeptical of identity politics on the basis of natural, immutable characteristics. Its well intentioned, but very often it seems to result in incredibly broad stereotypes and generalizations on a group level. Sometimes it can be harmless, but I think it runs the risk of normalizing stereotypes.

My roommate came home the other day and expressed surprise that one of her black coworkers is a big fan of the show Friends. I asked why and she said because black people arent represented on that show. She became flustered when I suggested that its possible to relate/identify with people who dont look like you. Not really a huge deal in this case, I suppose, but I dont want individuals to get lost in the shuffle.

Ask your friend what they mean. I'm black and not a fan of the black excellence myth, which is just repackaged bootstrap rhetoric.

Well it's a gna topic so

What does this even mean? Define "based around politics." Are we talking about people who follow and pay attention because it impacts the world around them and the people around them, or even because it directly impacts them? Are they miserable because they realize how terrible and frustrating the state of politics is?

Also please advise on how one knows who or what to vote for if they don't pay attention to any politics. Unless, of course, you think standing by ignorantly (and standing for nothing, especially if it doesn't affect you) is the key to happiness in life.

You know exactly what I mean and this is a really lame attempt at a gotcha.
