My toddler asked for something Pokemon related on the TV the other night and I humored her. Put on that Netflix CGI remake which I'm assuming is the exact same movie with new visuals. Previously she and I have checked out a couple of episodes and they seemed fine and basically what I remembered. She lost interest almost instantly in the movie and went off to play but that's overall not all that unusual. But I left it on as I was doing chores and the like.

Now I'm not fully paying attention and only watching bits and pieces. But damn this movie seemed super small scale? Basically most of the movie is on the same stormy island so 90% of the movie looks dull and boring which makes it all the more baffling they remade this in CG. Only the beginning and the end look decent. The entire plot from what I could tell is that bitter Mewtwo invites Pokemon trainers to this island so he can clone their Pokemon and make the Pokemon battle clones while droning on about how much it sucks being created and blah blah blah. He fights Mew while Pokemon fight clones (and from what I was noticing this seemed to last forever) until Ash gets in the middle of them, gets frozen as a statue (literally the only thing I remembered about this movie and it now seems obvious why) and Mewtwo sees the light and saves him. That's it for the first movie for such a global phenomenon.

Now I know this was probably supposed to be a direct to video movie or just meant for Japan when it was originally made or whatever and the companies tried to capitalize with a theater release due to the popularity of Pokemon after the fact. But damn do I feel sorry for the parents who were dragged to it. My Dad owes me a beer for going with my friends instead of him back in the day.

Now I'm wondering how the Digimon movie holds up. I remember liking that one back in the day too. But the only thing I remember is Kids in America.

The animation in the original version was actually very good, but otherwise it was absolute trash. The plot is campy enough that you can have fun with it, but it is very much the kind of show that people pointed to when they said they didn't like anime.

And the Digimon "movie" was hot trash. It was three shorts stitched together to have a loosely coherent plot but if you are old enough to be able to internalize meaning then you will very quickly recognize that the plot is insanely dumb and makes no sense on a fundamental level. Music was all right, at least.

I did not say that there was no age group that could not enjoy it. Just that it was trash.

The CG Remake although I'm pretty sure everything outside of the visuals is the exact same.

The US release took out the stuff about Mewtwo communicating with the little girl and other clone pokemon and their eventual demise. So yes, the version we saw as kids was shit.

4Kids basically butchered that movie by changing the morals and original meaning of the plot.

Also, the theatrical release didn't show the Origins of Mewtwo bits, which would have gone a long way towards explaining and expanding on Mewtwo's character. Instead, what audiences got was a comic book villain.

Makes sense. Compared to Mewtwo Ash was a bug and thus fit for the Super Effective damage boost.

Well the guy who wrote the movie had to tone it down because he was told the original script was too dark for children.

I mean, I'm not going to defend it that hard but hitting your target audience and meeting the goals of the project counts for something. Hop on pop doesn't have much of a plot but it has cute rhymes and helps teach kids to read.

The Digimon movie is fine if you just pretend it ends with the Diaboromon segment.

Runaway Locomon is the best Digimon film, though the dub is very hard to find iirc because it was only aired on cable and only like, one or two times.

This but 3 movies

Why would they think releasing three movies as a single one would make sense, why would they not make any indicator that they're not supposed to form a single cohesive storyline but instead be 3 stories, and why did they cut some of the things they did? Especially the third one, that one got butchered so badly it isn't even cohesive and logical within its own context. -_-
