Right? I adore the ending of the third book, it's so bittersweet and I'm always a sucker for bittersweet/tragic.

Check out the next era, Wax & Wayne, the final book came out a couple months ago and imo it's even better than the first era.

EDIT: And yeah Stormlight is goddamn fantastic.

Really fantastic series.
The "old west" side stuff didn't hit as good imo, bit still good and a fun setting.
I haven't read a Sanderson book that I didn't devour and crave more of.

Yeah the ending was fantastic. So many twists and turns right at the end, each building on the last, and the final bit felt like it was putting all the little pieces together. Always been weak to the "oh, by the way, your loved ones in the afterlife say hi" thing. Didn't expect that I'd feel so much emotion for some kid who was only a bit character when it all started.

Vin, Sazed, and Elend all had really great sendoffs, tbh.

I'm definitely gonna keep trekking through this stuff, but I'm gonna need a bit of a break, lol. I sort of burned through the trilogy in less than a month. Lots of fun, but a bit overwhelming, and idk what'd happen to me if I let myself get sucked into another big series right off the heels of this one. <_<

Can you summarize and possibly try to sell me what the series is about? I heard from my wives friends that they absolutely love this series.

Sanderson excels at building new and interesting magic systems.
Imagine a world where people can eat metal shavings and gain superhuman gifts.
One metal can let you hear people whisper from hundreds of feet.
One can make you strong enough to lift a car.
A couple can effectively make you fly, or even move bullets in mid air.
One can let you see in perfect zoomed vision for hundreds of feet or more.

Now think what it would be like if a single person could use every power, every magic available. They would seem like a mystical superhuman flying through the air, throwing cannonballs like marbles, and sniping you with a nail from a thousand yards.

I know what you mean lol. I have plenty of other things to read and with Sanderson, at least once you're caught up it's easier not to get burnt out. Unless you're like me and randomly reread them before new entries lol.

What meestermj said. It's a really fun magic system(s) that all his series have. As for what it's about, the first book is basically about a tyrant who has been ruling for hundreds of years and the protagonist falls in with a group that plans to overthrow him. Pretty much a heist story, and the story evolves from there.

Also, don't sleep on Elantris.

It's one of his earliest and man is it so good. He builds a world of mystery, and a wild political situation, while still having his signature "if the magic don't fit, I'll make new magic" flair.

It's also very interesting to see how metals being equated to powers changes the world economics.

For example, in said world, gold gives you a relatively worthless power, but there's a metal that basically nullifies every other power. Which one do you think is more valuable?

You know how in typical fantasy stories there's a heroic adventuring party that's out to save the day and rescue the world from a great evil? Well what happens if that adventuring party fails and the great evil actually takes over the world? The Mistborn series starts off with that as its premise, then mixes in a fantastic story with amazing world building and a detailed magical system on top of it.

Yes, but Bands of Mourning's epilogue is related to it tangentially.

I still haven't read The Lost Metal. Doing a reread of W&W 1-3 before I pick it up to refresh myself, since I've read so many books since my last reread that everything is a bit cloudy.

The entire Cosmere is connected. From what I remember, though, MB era 2 takes place in the ten year gap between Stormlight 1-5 and 6-10.

I don't recall any characters from one appearing in the other, except of course Hoid.

Ah ok. And it looks like book 5 isnt even out yet so that should be fine. Thanks!

Thanks! I figured that was the case, but if there was any "contemporary" overlap between the stories, I wanted to bounce between both for a complete experience.

Any overlap that will occur will happen primarily in the Stormlight Archives series of books. For any significant crossover, you should read Warbreaker before the 2nd and 3rd stormlight books. Then read The Secret History and White Sand before book 4.

Some Mistborn stuff becomes relevant in Stormlight 4 and Warbreaker stuff is pretty prevalent in Stormlight 2 onwards. Just as an fyi, I'm sure they'll be enjoyed in any order.

Mistborn OG trilogy were the first Sanderson books I read, and I enjoyed them. Problem is it's been ages and ages, and I read through all of Stormlight (which I enjoyed), and then I tried reading the first era 2 Mistborn book, and I realized I had completely forgotten what all happened in the Mistborn trilogy and I'm sorta lost on some stuff. I wish I could just get like a good summary that hits all the high points for someone who's already read it and wants a recap.

Possible HUGE spoilers next. Like, I remember there being some god ascension antics going on, but I cannot remember who did what exactly. Like, one of the main characters from the trilogy is now some kind of god in the cowboy western era? Are some characters still alive? Like is Kelsier alive? Vin? It's all so muddy to me. I just remember very general stuff. And then I also forget if anything is related to Stormlight. Like, was Hoid in Mistborn trilogy? I forget. Are there other links? But remember I've only read up until the first era 2 book for Mistborn!

You can check Coppermind for summaries of each book on the book's page.

https://coppermind.net/wiki/The_Hero_of_Ages

In regards to your specific questions, though. Towards the end of Hero of Ages, the vessel for the Shard of Preservation was killed. Vin took the power of the Shard and ascended, then used that power to fight Ruin/Ati. After Marsh, controlled by Ruin/Ati, killed Elend, Vin used the power of Preservation to basically annihilate herself and Ati. Sazed then took up the powers of both Ruin and Preservation from their bodies and became Harmony. There may or may not be other era 1 characters alive in era 2, but you'll have to RAFO. Vin's moved to the Beyond, though, for sure. Hoid is in every Cosmere book, though he doesn't always go by Hoid. And Demoux appears in an interlude in Way of Kings.

Mistborn Secret History should be read after Bands of Mourning if you dont want major spoilers for Era 2. It treats a plot twist as information you should already know

if you prefer character interactions and seeing hidden secrets of the first Era and dont mind major plot reveals then you should read Secret History now.

as for the rest of the Cosmere no other series is required for any other until you get to Stormlight 4. All projects after that will have a lot more connectivity. You dont necessarily need to have read the other books but they will starting treating knowledge from other books as somewhat of a given.

those books are:
Stormlight book 4: Rhythm of War
Mistborn Era 2 book 4: The Lost Metal
secret project 1: Tress & The Emerald Sea

ive spoiler tagged the last one because its only just released and they were trying to keep the title secret.

Id also add Warbreaker should really be read before Stormlight. Also read Elantris soon because its not his best work and the more you read the worse it seems.
