What the hell was Zak Gramarye's motive for framing the man taking care of his own daughter for cheating at card games, and why was he so upset by failure that he'd beat up his partner? It seems completely pointless in every way.

The Doylist answer is probably that multiple characters got combined into at least Phoenix, and possibly Zak also, and originally the plotlines were separate.

The Watsonian answer actually is just that he's an asshole and kinda dumb, I think.

More specifically, it was because Zak lost to him before and he just wanted payback and that was probably the only way he thought he could win. Since payback for losing was apparently more important to him than the good Phoenix had done, the fact that he's also a terrible enough person to clobber the accomplice that failed probably shouldn't come as a surprise

The Gramaryes being assholes got turned into a meme with how they're all terrible.

AA6 even had a case that kind of played on the meme lol.

The real answer is that Zak is a magic purist and it made him furious that Phoenix was using Trucy's special talent to cheat at cards.

It's pretty clear Zak doesn't weigh long-term consequences by any of his actions though.

Welcome to Apollo Justice, a game that makes so little sense in general that people were unofficially retconning it before AA5 came out.

Was he? I don't remember him being super dedicated to the craft to that degree.

Lost at what? Poker, when he was hiring him to be his lawyer?

All the Gramaryes take magic super seriously, which is part of what causes such a disconnect with the plot, because it makes no sense to the average player why Trucy won't help Apollo solve a magic trick to get their client off the hook, for example.

But yes, there's a line made almost in passing where Zak makes a snide remark about how Phoenix misuses Trucy's talents, and it's pretty clear he's unhappy about it.

There might be some measure of wanting revenge against Phoenix for beating him before, but I think it's secondary.
