Immortality would be the jealously guarded privilege of a tiny elite, who'll have no desire to see their share of resources constantly shrinking in a world in which the human population explodes because death has been abolished.

I think it depends on whats needed For example, if its just something where you put your mind in a sort of simulation (a connected simulation like a game world) where your body gets kept alive, and your mind is in the simulation, eventually, other people will go in because people will kept building the pods In the case, it doesnt matter what the powerful want as theyll all be in the simulation already

If its something like a drug they have to take regularly, then they could potentially keep it away from people for a while Though, even at that point, I think people would eventually fight over it. And possibly have a war. Who wins decides whether its something everyone can get or not

As for the population, people would have to make a choice. Have a kid or two, or eternal life, I would guess

I agree with everyone saying that at best we'll be able to digitize memories (and even that is very far away to do in any substantive/meaningful way, despite what people tend to think). Consciousness is a whole different thing and we are nowhere near being able to truly TRANSFER that (such that you don't feel like you're in your old body anymore). Frankly, I doubt it will ever be truly possible. At best it seems you could make a robot with your memories that tends to act like you, but again I doubt that would be "me" in any way that matters to me, particularly if I'm left behind in my body.

I suppose the new Avatar can be instructive here. How much would the old (dead) colonel care about the new colonel if he knew it was going to exist? He'd probably feel as presented in the movie: vaguely glad it was possible, but certainly not weeping for joy/having it make a large difference for him. And, tangent, I HATE when movies can't let dead characters go. Develop a new villain who doesn't look distractingly old when onscreen!

I can write down whatever I want people to remember about me as is: I'm not sure that saving a robot with my memories is truly much further down the road than that.
