I think it depends on whats needed For example, if its just something where you put your mind in a sort of simulation (a connected simulation like a game world) where your body gets kept alive, and your mind is in the simulation, eventually, other people will go in because people will kept building the pods In the case, it doesnt matter what the powerful want as theyll all be in the simulation already

If its something like a drug they have to take regularly, then they could potentially keep it away from people for a while Though, even at that point, I think people would eventually fight over it. And possibly have a war. Who wins decides whether its something everyone can get or not

As for the population, people would have to make a choice. Have a kid or two, or eternal life, I would guess
