I don't have a PS5, and I don't know how valid this is, but I've be seeing it go around:

https://twitter.com/frwololo/status/1610815598811914242

But 2 years in the consoles life, hardware experts from console repair shops are telling a different story:

According to 68Logic, a PlayStation scene member who owns a hardware repair shop in France since 2010, using your PS5 vertically can damage it permanently, and hes seen the result first hand with his clients consoles.

The problem, he says, is that the liquid metal used to cool the APU can sometimes spill, and become uneven, which impacts (at least) the cooling. Ben Montana, owner of specialized repair shop ILoveMyConsole in France, has also been trying to bring attention to this issue for months. He says these are not isolated cases. According to him, the risk is high for PS5s that have been standing vertically for a long time, and he says all models are impacted. This includes Digital edition consoles, as shown in the picture below (some people theorize that the vibrations of the Blu Ray drive could make the issue more severe on Physical Edition PS5s)

Uh who can position it horizontally? Turn it horizontally and it's half of your room.

Yeah my "entertainment center' is a low deal that has the TV on top of it, as well as my Switch and PS5, so turning my PS5 sideways is the more awkward choice.

I think I can manage, but honestly the thing looked more liable to break in a horizontal orientation. >_>

sounds realistic, liquid metal as a thermal interface is rarely used in mass produced models for a reason.

gaskets don't retain their elasticity perfectly under the conditions a chip woulld be either.

there's probably less computers with people who are aware of how to apply liquid metal than ps5s at this point.

No. It's specifically a problem with what sony is using. Liquid Metal is extremely good for thermal transfers, which is why it's used by extreme PC enthusiasts to get the lowest temperatures possible. The problems, however are a good handful:
1)It's an electrically conductive paste meaning that if you accidentally get it anywhere that ISN'T directly and ONLY directly on the integrated heat spreader or *exact* chips it's meant to cool, it will fry your PC in a heartbeat and turn it into a paperweight.
2)IIRC, Liquid Metal is not exactly known for longevity, having it in an orientation that gravity could affect over time is not going to help matters there.

It could just be sony's actual application of it & whatever cooling system they designed not having enough pressure, or too much.

I have like zero room to be laying it horizontally. Besides, it's only an issue that pops up in a fraction of players.

There's a reason why Liquid Metal is only used by the extreme end of OverClockers.

It's not something you normally would use.

$500 says this is bullshit clickbait because PS5 and Series X (both designed as ideally vertical consoles) are basically PCs with their own competent cooling systems.

Now if it was disc drive regression, okay MAYBE I might believe this trash but otherwise no.

I dunno if it's clickbate.

the guy has a repair shop, and said it's an issue he's been seeing.

maybe it's not a widespread thing, where millions of PS5 owners need to worry about, but from his experience, it could be something to consider.
