It takes time creating the 95% of content that won't be in the final product because you forgot what leading with a clear vision is.

Eh... I feel that it's mostly an exaggeration. A very large scale new IP could take a while, but 3-5 years is still the norm. Death Stranding was in development for 3 years. Elden Ring was in development for 5 years. God of War 2018 took 5 years, God of War Ragnarok took 4 years. Xenoblade Chronicles 3 took 4 years. You get the idea.

The games that take like 7+ years are the outliers. Like Bethesda's Starfield has supposedly been in development since 2015. So we're approaching 8 years on that one. Cyberpunk 2077 was in development for about 9 years.

In the comments Jason mentioned some indie studios take a similar amount of time to churn out a game too. That is crazy. Looking through my memories I do know of one example. A game that was teased in 2013 but still not out yet. It is being made by only 1 guy so the slow progress is somewhat understandable. That said for some reason he works on several other of his work-in-progress games at the same time. People joke that he probably only spends 15 mins a day developing his games lol. If only he would focus on making 1 game at a time maybe the game i want to play would be out by now.

Just as an example of how much longer it takes for AAA games to be made these days

Final Fantasy 1-10 came out over the first 14 years of the series

Final Fantasy 11-16 will have come out over the next 21 years of the series

Yeah, there are spin offs and sequels in that span, but nonetheless, it still took 150% as much time to make 60% as many mainline games.

It is weird looking at the release dates of old games and how short the gap between them was.

Why does it take so long
AAA companies too busy trying to make pseudo-movies instead of videogames.
