To paraphrase what he said, "Down there are people who will follow any dragon, worship any god, and ignore any inequity. Because of the usual, boring badness of everyday life. Not the kind of high, creative loathing that characterises the great sinners, but rather a kind of industrialised gloominess of the spirit. You could call it a sin, if you wanted to be incredibly uncreative. They give in to evil not because they agree with it, but because they can't or won't reject it.
