Hot dogs, garbage plates, nachos, cheeseburgers, fries, etc.

Is it true ignorance or just a case of simply not caring because they taste so good?

I believe most realize it. Maybe not portion size (it's "normal" for us), but I don't think people have the idea that most of our food is healthy. Thanks to capitalism, most of the healthy stuff is overpriced and out of reach for people.

If you were to ask them what the chemicals were in their food, they would have no idea, and get upset at you for questioning them.

Enjoy tasty food, shorter lifespan

Suffer more expensive, more bland, less tasty food and living longer doing it.

I think most people would rather pick a middle ground and or slightly leaning to the first option.

A large part of the issue is this:

> Is cheap
> Is healthy
> Tastes good (this includes a diet with variety rather than the same stuff every meal)

> You can only pick 2.

You can eat cheap and healthy if all you eat is rice, beans, basic produce, and chicken (and even chicken is starting to get expensive). You can eat healthy and tastes good/has good variety if you can afford more expensive cuts of meat, produce, healthy desserts, etc. You can have a varied, flavorful diet that is cheap if you buy trash with lots of preservatives and artificial flavors.

Most Americans *have* to take Cheap as one of their two options. The majority seem to also choose to have meals that taste good and have a variety of options rather than eating some combination of rice, beans, and chicken 3 meals a day.

I always find it odd when people say unhealthy food is cheaper.
If anything I find it more expensive...at least considering it's trash.

I'll spend the extra dollar if I have to eat something that isn't garbage and will actually fill you properly.

Thats easily debunked. Animal proteins are the most expensive food and gorging on ramen and chey boyardee is being a kid.

Get some whole grain pasta/rice, veggies and non animal protein like tofu, lentils, chickpea ..rtc and it can be pretty cheap. Americans just cant give up their sugar flavored meals and are lazy to cook healthy meals.

McDonalds are different in Europe and USA.
A Big Mac meal with a milkshake in Europe is around 1,400 calories.
In USA, it is 1,870 calories.
The drinks are much bigger in USA.
Europe got more vegetarian and chicken options.

Seeing that 1870 calories are just below what they recommend you to eat daily, it makes a huge difference if you eat there often.
And the European vegetarian and chicken options are superior.

I am not American but I love their food when I was young. My mom told me these are unhealthy, she even described those chicken with 8 legs and 3 pairs of wing! The chicken has been injected a specific medicine. Too exaggerated!!! In fact, fired food with high calorie and causing fat. This is real! I was a fat girl since I like to have my dinner in KFC.

Of course we know. The issue is that most of us don't care.

The average person is only concerned about things that are guaranteed to harm them immediately. Not eating healthy isn't guaranteed to ruin your health, especially if you get a decent amount of exercise, and even if it does it won't happen immediately, so many are fine with taking that risk.

Might not be smart, but that's humanity for you.

I mean...your health is already in a downward spiral over working so much, eating out all the time will just make it worse. Of course, ideally we shouldn't work so much.

Theres simply no sugar coating it, nor ahould there be so people understand. Ify ou eat the typical american diet, YOU WILL get chronic health diseases down the road. And healthy meals ARE attainable in any budget.

I'm sure most people are aware. But if that's what you grew up eating or it's a cultural thing (as American as apple pie) it's hard to not what that particular food. Cheeseburgers aren't too healthy but damn I love them. Favorite food.

In regards to healthier food costing more I kinda disagree. Not taking into account recent inflation with some staples (eggs, wheat, stuff like that) it's really not that expensive to eat healthy. Beans, brown rice, eggs, in season produce, fish, chicken, etc. Eating healthy is also eating a proper portion so if you're eating only what you actually need and not getting second and third helpings you obviously won't need to purchase as much. And drink water. Soda is ridiculously expensive.

I literally feed my family of four for around $100 a week. Sometimes a little more if I need to stock up on something. We don't eat meat at every meal which helps. Lots of beans (bought dry, which are extremely cheap. Instant Pot has them ready in less than an hour) and vegetables. I buy fresh, but frozen veggies are cheap too.
