why do i need 10 megalixers? im never gonna use them because what if i need them later?

I really like how the Bravely games handled that. There's a class that specifically utilizes consumables.
Unfortunately blue mage (vampire) got totally neutered in sequels and also require consumables to work.

This, if you can't weigh when to use the items then I can't imagine you'd be able to weigh when to use skills and stuff properly

I do like games that balance difficulty in a way so that it's expected you'll use a decent amount of items (SMT/Persona for instance).

skills are easier cause you get all your MP and energy back easily. so im always using them

i liked the way zelda link between worlds and breath of the wild did it, where you just wait to recharge to use the items. no need to farm bombs or arrows to get through the dungeon, just wait for the magic meter to recharge

Trust me... after slogging my way through Final Fantasy 1, I'm happy I have consumables. If you've never tried it, the first half of the game is filled with poison monsters because why the fuck not. So I'm forced to carry around a couple dozen heals just to cancel that out. I'm also forced to level a Red Mage just to get a Cure spell, and overlevel him so I can get warp. Which btw, I still don't have even though I'm level 25 right now. Fucking 6th level spells.

but ethers can only be found in chests or a 0.5% drop from a rare mob, and you only get like 7 in the whole game

consumables are great, it's non-renewable consumables that you can't apply to your build or playstyle that are bullshit

most of elden ring's crafting is garbage because of this. you get recipes for things that make you think they'll be renewable, but the ingredients are stupidly rare and require hours grinding enemies to build up a decent stock of what you want, so i never bothered

imagine using your potion of megafiraga but then the enemies absorb or reflect fire

basically just reset the game even if the situation is salvageable

that's not true. It's hard to use them because of hoarder mentality. The hoarder knows their MP or whatever will be replenished when they sleep at an inn or whatever. Can't say the same for consumables.

That's on you for either forgetting or not testing.

You shouldn't keep your consumables at Maximum Inventory, it should be near Maximum, but never at Maximum.

This way, when you find a new consumable in the field, you have room in your inventory for it.

So don't be afraid to use your consumable if you need to, just don't go crazy on it and use it as a crutch.

Why are you that severely underleveled?

I like how the Witcher 3 handles its consumables, with the myriad of Witcher potions, bombs, oils, and decoctions having a limited number of uses, but once you craft them for the first time, you can easily replenish them by meditating.

Food and drinks are also quite easy to come by, so I never feel like Im running into scenarios where Geralt isnt properly stocked up and prepared without it ultimately being my own fault.

Realistically, how often do you find a boss that you needed 99 Mega Elixers for?

I've never encountered it, I don't know about your experience, but I've never really seen a boss that was designed for that type of encounter either.

in persona 5, on the 7th palace boss, I had to use one soma (megalixer) and it was the most painful decision of my life. But that boss sequence was brutal

Using 1x Mega-Elixer is WAY different than needing 99x Mega-Elixers.

Yes, absolutely. Or I could hang on to that one extra megalixir just in case I do meet that one-in-a-million extra hard boss and then we'll see who has the last laugh. @_@

I've never found a need to use any consumables beyond the occasional health potion. They give you these weird throwable weapons, or status buff items for weapons..... but like 100% of the time it's faster and easier to just use my character's own attacks than screw around in my inventory to find a good combo of consumables.

Fire Emblem was surprisingly a game where I never actually had a problem with item management. Maybe just because there's a narrower range of things that can happen to you.

You will never need them later. Unless a JRPG is specifically marketing itself to hardcore crowds, just use whatever you want as you need it.

Except Final Fantasy 3, where stockpiling the Megalixers you've found throughout the game will make the difference between the Crystal Tower (and the final boss gauntlet) being reasonably difficult and an utterly intolerable bitch.

Lol what is 1 point in strength going to do? Is my sword going to do 976 damage instead of 972 damage? Wow that'll help against the random mountain goblins I'm killing in 1 hit.
