I think it is a metaphor for the internet. Your 'Avatar' is your internet personality. It used to be a pristine world with a native population but was taken over by imperial interests.

I haven't seen either movie, but Way of Water symbolizes the idea of a valuable resource on a planet that was previously abundant with it, but had no tragedy of the commons. I'm not sure what the water is, but it might be the unobtanium from the first movie.

I have seen the first movie

Its just about an advanced civilization ruining the environment of a pristine land and having to fight the angry native population. The main character is a human in a wheelchair who is offered an experiment to put his mind inside an alien body that was grown in a lab. That is what the Avatar is. The alien body with the human mind.

Not a bad theory... The only flaw it really has is that it implies James Cameron is capable of subtext when he's just bashing the audience over the head with his message.
