For me this was a big year actually. I have a ps5 so I've been playing some games on that this year. I got the premium subscription and I enjoy it.

I also got a gaming PC this year, replaced my 10 year-old one. So recently I've been playing Cyberpunk, Dune Spice Wars, Civ 6, and The Calisto Protocol.

I've played some Switch over the year, but just casual stuff, and I don't think I got any new games for it this year.

What were some of your 2022 gaming highlights?

I've played multiple games, and bought a few bigger titles and indies, but I only beat God of War Ragnarok.

I got banned from town of salem. Other than that it's been a blast this year. Lots of Hades/Diablo 2/Grim Dawn action.

It's been a great year for me... Played a lot of games, beat quite a few (46), got some great Collector's Editions, and got two awesome Switches (Pokemon and Splatoon)...

It looks like next year might be slower for me but that's not bad... Still have a ton to play...

  • Started off with a bunch of Megaten games
  • Then I dont remember what I played
  • Then I played through Valkyria Chronicles 1&2
  • Then I got my steam deck and Ive been playing Fallout 3, NV, and 4

Getting my steam deck was a game changer. There seem to have been some good games released on Switch that I need to check out.

Pretty good gaming year overall. Aside from January, May and September, there was at least 1 game release every month, that I was interested in. Plus, I finally had time to go back and beat games from 2021, like Marvel's Guardian's of the Galaxy.

GOTY is either Elden Ring or Xenoblade 3 for me. I took my sweet ass time with the latter at like 140+ hours by the time I finished the game since I did almost everything the game had to offer(blind). I played a lot of MH Rise Sunbreak, and I finally got around to starting and beating Metroid Dread. Other than that it was mostly indie stuff and/or Metroidvania's. I went back to some classics like Super Metroid and Castlevania SotN, and I played both CotM and HoD off the Castlevania Advance Collection for the first time.

I beat probably the most games ever for me in one year, if I'm counting roguelikes I went back to.

Played the least amount of games than any other year of my life since playing games. Barely at all. Completely depressing year with no motivation for shit

At the start I was still enjoying the best thing I've found in years. Then it gradually flickered out, the magic wore off.
Since it was confirmed I could indeed still get invested in and excited about video games like that, the rest of the year was me trying to find something that could recapture that level of interest.

At the end though, I'm thinking it wasn't something I can simply go looking for. I've broken it down to a few elements.
  1. Curiosity. I wasn't told much about the game, nor hyped. I just played the new Smash game, one of the characters made me curious and then I saw his game was one of the ones I'd been lent so I went in blind and ended up loving it. There were no pre-conceived notions or promises made up front about it, all curiosity. This all but confirms for me that Blockbuster is the missing piece. If we could rent games and try them with no curated demos or scammer devs getting to pull all the strings, there might still be hope for the industry.
  2. Escapism. It sounds corny but for a few months I was really spending all my time in another world full of characters and ideas I cared about. I was laughing at myself for having the "No I have to keep playing I am the only one who can get these characters where they need to go" thing for the first time in years but I wasn't gonna deny I was enjoying it. It also made me rediscover that thin where you lie in your bed with the express purpose of going to sleep, but pull the handheld out and keep playing anyway. That was nostalgic. Some of the characters reminded me of some ideas I had so it was great finally getting some points of comparison and one of the characters was on a whole other level. I had one play session that lasted almost two days uninterrupted. I had to. I still have to. I want to give a shit about something this much again.
  3. That feeling of unearthing buried treasure. It came out years ago, I didn't know anything about it, like a relic from a past time. It's almost romantic, the sheer sense of "Where have you been all this time?" is overpowering. It makes it feel special like you've taken a roundabout path but you've eventually gotten where you were meant to.
  4. It left me wanting more. I would have liked it to last forever but they decided to stick the landing while they could. It isn't an easy game to replay. I got a second playthrough in thanks to wanting to try some OP customisation and wanting to rewatch the story with hindsight on my side. I am kind of disgusted at myself for enjoying what sounds like a Sony-esque one and done when you put it like this. I don't think the ending was even meant to be sad or bittersweet, I just can't remove the feeling of the game world sending you back to the real world after your purpose is fulfilled.
I want there to be a way to recreate this.

The rest of 2022 was shit. Real deal shit. No hope. Nothing that came out or got announced looked good. Your usual heap of shallow hype trains, scams, shovelware, gacha shit, one and dones for streamers, all graphics no replay value games, a bunch of soulless looking games with simulator in the title. TF2 is still being eaten by bots, Payday 2 went full anti-fun all profit and I quit, Capcom is still shit, I want to be compelled toward Nintendo but they're not coming out with anything that draws me in.
No Viewtiful Joe 3 again.
I hate

Not gigantic for me, tbh.

I started the year with Elden Ring (like everyone else). It was also my GOTY.

I started playing DBD with friends a few times a week.

I work out-of-state in the summer, so no gaming from June - mid August.

Got into Diablo.

Continued playing FF14 (at the beginning of Endwalker).

I ended the year playing GoW Ragnarok and Dark Souls 3. I had only played Bloodborne and Elden Ring, so I wanted to play that one, and I loved it. I also played Guilty Gear Strive sporadically, and I'm sitting on Sonic Frontiers and Neon White to finish at the start of this year.

I don't think I'll have another game purchase until the RE4 Remake in March. I'll wait for a sale for the Dead Space Remake, since I just played it on PC in October.

First half from most to least:

Elden ring (green), dark souls remastered, outward, and tiny bit of fallout 2 (i played fallout 2 from middle of December to Very early Jan).

Jun and July I did not game much. Pretty sure I was binging multiple fantasy books those two months and gaming felt boring

2nd half from most to least:

Dmc 3 (light blue), followed by various adventure games that were mostly point n clicks.

Crisis core reunion came out. That's all I needed for it to be a good year. I finally played witcher 3 too. That was pretty good.
