Let's pretend 2 didn't happen. Let's say we got a game where:
  • silent protagonist
  • huge diverse biomes
  • little to no land stuff
  • bigger, more mysterious monsters
  • greater physical depths and deeper mysteries
  • gtfo with the seatruck, give me a baller submarine again
  • no real way to deal with the leviathan monsters forcing you to fear them and avoid them, just like the first game
Imagine that. Damn I miss subnautica

But itw not impossible. A lot of franchises try to experiment with part 2 and then part 3 goes back to being like part 1

I didn't finish the first game yet. A disaster of my own making ocurred and I lost motivation. I got to some cool ass underwater purple tree and it had like jellyfish floating around it. I think it was right above a lava biome and it was past some ghost leviathan. I was gonna make it my new base, so I deconstructed my main base in the shallows and hauled ass in my cyclops. But when I got down there I didn't have enough material to solidify it so it kept leaking. And I was nearly out of fuel for my cyclops and I couldn't easily get back to the surface to do a few more gathering runs. So I gave up

I was gonna play 2 after I beat 1 one day. Is it actually bad? I heard there's more of a focus on the story which I wouldn't be a fan of for a game like this. But other than that isn't it just subnautica, antarctic horrors edition?

I think one in space would be a neat concept. Some sort of destroyed planet, and you are try to survive among the floating pieces of rock and and all that. There could be a mix of the remnants of the planets species trying to survive on the remnants of the planets biomes, space predators coming in from the outside, etc

I agree with these points. I don't mind some land stuff though. Subnautica had about the perfect amount. Also, sometimes I like building shore bases, especially now that surface hatches and large rooms can be built.
Also, I think Below Zero is still very good, just not quite near the epicness of Subnautica. Aside from the points you mentioned it might have been more interesting if Delta Island was not in the center of the map, because I can't think of any other sensible place to build my main base.

Ah yes, this too. As a general point, go back to being a horror survival and not an action adventure.

2 isn't a bad game but it moved away from so many of the principles that made the first game successful, which I think was a mistake.

@Kloe_Rinz

I have not played this only seen the trailer . Don't know if it has any of the stuff you asked for. But it plays like Subnautica except in a zero g no air environment

Also needs a co-op mode for replayability. Would have been nice to pilot the cyclops with a friend.

Ah, as it happens I was just looking into that game. According to reviews, it's very disappointing. It sort of looks right, but has no depth to its crafting, the survival aspects are too annoying and the second half of the game goes off in a weird irrelevant direction.

I wouldn't say there's a lot 'wrong' with Below Zero, but it's more like there are a bunch of things about it that could've been better, that were in fact better in Subnautica, which should really be the other way around considering Below Zero is the sequel.
To this day I'd still rate Subnautica 10/10 and Below Zero 8/10.

Thats similar to how I would have envisioned subnautica in space. But not just a wreckage but also the destroyed planet and less of a focus on combat. And also not disappointing if what the other guy said is true

Well I feel better knowing it's still worth a play, some sequels were really bad over the years.

I'm sitting on Breathedge also, might give it a look but I generally don't like zero gravity mechanics in gaming at all. They are kind of my underwater levels.

I feel like Subnautica in space would be something akin to Outer Wilds. I never did finish that one...

It's smaller, and you can deal with the creatures better. So the massive scary leviathans are less of a threat now and more of a minor inconvenience.

There's way less sense of mystery and wonder and fear. It feels more like an open world action adventure game, where the last one had this sense of horror and dread about it.

There's a lot of talking and plot. The last game was one where you'd have to go in search of the plot, this one feeds it to you.

Outer wilds is great (so far, yet another one I left unfinished >.>)
but its a different game really. Its more of a puzzler in space, and the way its set up, survival elements wouldnt really fit.

Outer Wilds was one of my favourite games of the decade, but it's not a survival or crafting game at all. Still, they nailed the atmosphere.
