Southwest is facing the biggest cluster fuck of all time. They're only answer is, "Well, sorry."

I'd understand if it was weather but Southwest seems to be the only airline company that's canceling flights.

I saw one news station talk to an employee who said that they have a scheduling problem because of the system that schedules the workers and that worker said the company should listen to the union.

There's definitely some internal shit going on.

Airlines been plagued with delays and few if any cancelations, for months. Not enough pilots.

Southwest is one of the largest airlines in US. There will be scheduling issues If their planes are delayed or flights canceled. This is due to flight crews not being able to transfer flights within schedule. Also, flight crews could also fly with other airlines to make their flights. Not all transit flights transfers flight crews. Airlines were really busy this holiday season. This winter canceled flights due to weather.

Between pilot shortages and the weather, i think thats how Southwest needed to cancel their flights. There wasnt enough seats available within these days. It just wasnt safe to operate the airline in these conditions.

I cant believe theyre asking people to go home Ive stayed over night at the airport many times That said, four days is a lot But many people might not have a place to go home to If they were on vacation somewhere they dont have family, or if they dont have enough money for a hotel for a few days, or any number of reasons

Is it the weather? Which parts of the country are having suck shitty weather? Also, I know the little airport in the city I currently live in does pay for stuff. They actually get the bus company I use to work at to take them to specific hotels. And pay for the night there. While Southwest probably should do that, they probably dont have the money to. Nor do they probably work with any hotels in the area. My city is somewhat small, so it works well with the rest of the city. Bigger cities with bigger airports probably dont have to do it as much And usually, they can get people on another flight in a couple of days

That said, it seems like pilots and flight crew are the issue I feel that could be resolved Canceling everything is probably going to make things worse, though

My brother is a fight attendant for Southwest. He said a lot of things are fucked right now. Their scheduling system crashing, the lack of workers (this is a two- fold problem since there are regulations for the number of hours airline employees can work), and the weather caused a domino effect.

The sheer stakes involved make this unacceptable.

And funny when if I have to cancel a flight last second bc of illness or unexpected circumstances I don't get a refund but when they cancel a flight people are simply asked to bear with them.

Damn what a shit show. I was a huge fan of SW. We have the credit card, its always our top choice in airline due to free checked bags, free flight changes and cancellations, etc. But after reading that reddit thread I'm pretty turned off.

Honestly the cancellation/change policy is the main thing that I hate about other airlines.

The weather started it, but their crew scheduling software is ancient. So anytime theres a cancellation the crew member has to call into scheduling for them to manually adjust their schedule.

99% reliability in 1 year means there is 3.65 days of Failure. <- Sounds about right given how horrendous SW has been performing this week.
99% reliability is D+ class service when it comes to the "Availability Rate" of a service IMO.

LOL, upgrading after this debacle isn't going to bring back all the customers you pissed off and swore to never fly SouthWest again.

Southwests operations are unusual among the four carries that dominate the U.S. market, relying more heavily on a point-to-point route model than a system of hubs and spokes. Such a system can leave crews and planes far from where they need to be when problems hit, slowing the recovery.
