Guys you know the trend by now. Every so often north korea needs to feel relevant so they do something to get in the news and then they back off for a while. Rinse and repeat for 60 years.

i can imagine kim jong un chortling as he pilots a drone one inch into south korean airspace, then quickly brings it back

Yep. That whole region is a powder keg as is and NK views the current regime in SK as weak. This is a problem.

Buddy, this is not even the worst thing nk has done this year. Unless you consider firing missles no big deal, this is actually really tame to his past antics.

I mean they fired a missile over Japan earlier in the year. This isn't exactly remarkable.

But it's also true. North Korea is only technically at war with South Korea, but in reality, NK probably receives the most support from South Korea because they're extremely poor and disadvantaged due to their closed borders. Majority of their economy is just straight up donations from other countries. Every single time they step too far past their line, their charity will be affected.

They have everything to lose from actually escalating the situation, so the best they can do atm is just fire some stupid shit every now and then to keep themselves relevant and looking like a threat so that the countries keep placating them with funds.

But several years ago, NK did an unauthorized attack that sank a SK navy ship, killing a lot of people. That incident did not escalate into a restart of the war. If that didn't do it, literally nothing would outside an actual missile strike on a nation, primarily SK. It's clear that after decades, NK has the means to start the war again, and the other countries would oblige. NK would get fucking obliterated without China, who doesn't really give a shit at this point, and they know it. NK doesn't want a war, SK doesn't want a war, gave up on the concept of reunification decades ago

Western media doesn't know half of this. But you can get a really good bearing of how the NK situation is actually treated by SK by looking up any interviews of regular day citizen in SK every time NK does anything. They're mostly like "oh... again? Well it's probably nothing"

Not to mention, modern day military service in SK is a joke at this point. Soldiers have full access to the internet and their phones, and there have been at least 5 reality tv shows in the last decade where the military is just seen as a fun place you can work out in. They've tried their best to market their military to be a hip thing because they know it's been a farce for decades, but they can't exactly stop it either.

i get what you're saying, and it is true to an extent, but that doesn't mean that this kind of stuff just shouldn't be reported in the media at all. should the media be "freaking out about it" like was asserted earlier in this topic? probably not. but personally this article doesn't really scream "freaking out" to me. it's just reporting that it happened. and there is nothing wrong with doing that.

Yeah I probably agree with you. This particularly isn't a freak out article and newsworthy. But yeah in SK, every time NK does anything, it's more or less a footnote

I think western readers freak out a lot more. Also the missile over Japan thing was reported a lot more widely in Western news than in SK

I mean there have been skirmishes before with lives taken. Just two years ago there was a South Korean man who accidentally crossed the sea line and got killed.

And they had actual battles back in 2002 which didn't lead to anything more.
