I think it stems from a feeling that it was far more successful than it had any right to be.

While I would go so far as to agree with that sentiment, its not unusual and not worth getting bent out of shape for. We dont live in a meritocracy and theres plenty of media out there that is very successful despite, in my opinion, not being particularly worthy of it.

But then that's true for most films. Not sure why Avatar is special in that regard. It doesn't mean anything and isn't the knock against it some seem to think it is.

I think people just expect a movie that made as much money as it did and was seen by so large an audience to have made a more significant impact in the cultural collective consciousness.

That said it sort of did. It's something everyone can look at and agree "yeah it was a very pretty, very vapid sort of thing". Sort of like how McDonalds is synonymous with "I'd rather eat most anything else but this is cheap"

Tbh plenty of movies that have since made over $1 billion dollars are even less 'culturally impactful' than Avatar is.

Jurassic World
The Lion King 2019 (and all of the Disney live action remakes)
Aquaman
Captain Marvel
The Fast and the Furious movies that made over a billion dollars which didn't have that song which got extra meaning because Paul Walker recently died
Incredibles 2
Iron Man 3
Spider-man: Far From Home
Transformers sequels
Zootopia
Finding Dory
Alice in Wonderland
The Hobbit

A whole bunch of movies that at most are associated to a bigger franchise that already had cultural impact before these movies. Nobody really cares about any of these specific movies at all anymore. Hell all of these movies are overall pretty recent. Movies that made significantly less money than them in the 80s and 90s are still overall more 'culturally impactful' than all of these.

Avatar at least has the Na'vi, the influence over 3D movies and the record.

i dont think you know what cultural impact means

most of those movies you listed have lines ppl can quote

they have ppl who can discuss their plots

ppl actually like going back to watch them again

seems you just listed movies you dont like and want to pretend they have had no impact

That and a hallway scene near the start, in a space ship

It had a sense of depth so it felt like I really was looking down a hallway

I wonder if people who call it boring, saw it in 2d. The reason it was interesting in 2009 was the 3d. Not the story. It was the new 3d technology that everyone was amazed by

if you have to watch a movie a certain way for it to be enjoyable then its a bad movie

a film should be jsut as enjoyable at home on your couch as it is in theaters (hell i hate movie theaters they are loud adn croweded)

That's kind of the point being made, though. Nobody remembers it because they think the story, characters, etc. were good. They liked it because it was pretty.

I never saw it in theaters, because it looked awful and I saw Sherlock Holmes instead that year...so I can vouch for the idea that the movie does not stand up on its own as anything particularly great.

If you have to see it in a theater with 3D glasses on for it to be good, then the movie itself isn't really that amazing, now, is it?

The thing is the cultural impact of a movie just isn't the same as it used to be.

A Few Good Men came out three decades ago. Even if you haven't seen that movie you know the "You Can't Handle the Truth!" line. It was shown in commercials. It was parodied and referenced on TV fand even other movies for over a decade. Everyone got exposed to it. It was unavoidable. This was a military court drama!

These days a movie comes out and more people watch it than ever. Then the fans post memes on social media about it for a bit together. Maybe the hardcore fans stick around and continue posting memes for longer. If it's a franchise there will be merch and other movies to sell to those people. That's about the extent of it. If you don't give a rats ass about it you probably won't be exposed to it much at all outside of seeing it in stores. Parodies in film and TV don't really work anymore considering the internet has long mined that husk before they can get around to it.

Even when you look at The Simpsons back in its peak which referenced movies and other TV shows all the time. It felt natural. Even if it was old. Homer cries out for cancelled Sheriff Lobo in the night and even if you don't know the show it's funny. Now you log on Disney+ and there's an entire short about Loki ending up in Springfield voiced by Tom Hiddleston because Disney now owns both The Simpsons and Marvel. In a world where Simpsons is nowhere near as revelant.

Pop culture is somehow more popular than ever but also more segmented. It's not universal like it used to be. We aren't all watching the same late night hosts every night making jokes we all hear. We consume and move on from things faster than we ever did. Which overall means that the pop culture impact isn't going to be the same.

On top of that in the days before streaming you either had to watch what was on TV or simply watch a video or DVD you already own or rented. It's just different all around.

Everything is inspired by something. They're people you're supposed to like. Granted, Id be ignorant if there is something offensive. So, Id have no idea if it's actually offensive or just overly sensitive people with nothing better to do. It's hard to tell right away when both things are plentiful simultaneously

This release was honestly pretty fucking great but yeah, almost no depth. There were literally significant momentsthat were covered with facial expressions between computer generated beings. I get it, but that type of shit doesnt hold up long term societally.
