That "strength" label has nothing to do with how strong or even how flavourful the coffee is.

When you see a bag that says "max strength level 5" or whatever, that just means that they roasted the fuck out of the coffee for so long that the beans are little more than dessicated husks by the time they're done. The strength is just telling you that they've more or less completely charred the beans to death and you're going to get extremely bitter notes.

If anything, this is sort of like well done steak. By the time the chef is done you paid $40 for the pleasure of them destroying everything that made that steak expensive. If you like how that tastes then that is absolutely your prerogative as a grown up adult, of course.

On the other end, a light coffee does not mean it is insipid. It means that they aimed to lightly caramelise the bean to a point where all the interesting flavour compounds come out, but no more than that.

If you want really flavourful coffee, go for light or medium roasts and play about with your water temperature.

Better is entirely subjective and no matter how much of a snob someone like me is I'm not out to tell you what to enjoy.

Coffee flavour is affected by the environment the beans grew in, the species of bean, how it is roasted, how it is grinded and how it is made. These are all just different dials that basically affect whether it tastes more fruity and acidic or more bitter and "chocolatey" or whatever.

Basic rule of thumb: dark roasts are bitter. Light roasts are fruity. Brew it not long enough and it tastes sour, brew it too long and it tastes bitter. Ffat chunky grinds take longer to brew than finer grinds.

Unsure if this is really true or not, but James Hoffman (coffee guru) reckosn that for decent expresso you need a machine that starts around the $300 mark. Everything under that lacks the pressure/heat required to make it properly.

All you need for espresso is an espresso machine. You can buy prepackaged espresso grounds. It won't be as good as freshly ground espresso, but it's not a requirement.

I'm not sure where you're coming from regarding a "press", though.

Aren't you supposed to press the coffee into a puck before putting it in the espresso machine? That's how I've always seen it done

I do trust what Hoffman has to say about coffee. He always seems to put a lot of thought and research into the things he says

Never really had the time or patience to wait on or deal with brewed coffee unless I buy it already made.

Never bought the overly fancy stuff anyway.

Recently I found Juan Valdez instant coffee and it's pretty damn good as far as instant coffee goes.

You are. However, every espresso machine comes with a press either attached to the machine or to the scoop used to fill the basket.

I will say that if you grind your own beans, you will make a much better shot of espresso, but it's not necessary. And if you do want to grind your own beans, you'll really want a ceramic burr-grinder. And while those aren't cheap, you can get one for around $200-250.

Oh cool, I didn't realize the press was part of the machine. I just didn't wanna add another gadget to the kitchen with limited drawer space

I think the grinder I use rn is a Krups. It does pretty well for the french press, but idk if it could get the coffee fine enough to form into a puck

If it says it can grind to espresso fineness... then it'll work well enough. You may need to fiddle with it to get the exact fineness you want, but you'll eventually work out what you like the best.

But for the first few months, don't grind more than 1-2 days worth of grinds, otherwise you won't want to experiment much to discover what you like.

---

As for Hoffman, he can probably make the best shot of espresso possible... but he's overly picky about the whole thing. There's no measuring grams of espresso grinds at a local cafeteria in southern Europe (home of the espresso).

You just fill the basket and tamp it down with a moderate amount of force, then pull the shot.

And you can certainly find a decent espresso maker for around $300. Personally, I like Delonghi machines. I've never had a bad shot out of a Delonghi, ever.

I had just bought s Cuisinart DCC-3000 after the Keurig machine was leaving sediment in my cups.

it's alright. usually buy dark roast peets coffe, but i just got a bag of light roast stuff so we'll see how that goes. asked for a grinder for xmas so i can start buying whole beans and see if it tastes better. drink coffee more when i'm wfh more often, so it's nice to drink better coffee.

you just broke the scale up.

The "official" cleaner is overpriced ass. 1 to 4 parts vinegar and water, run it out and let it set, then about a cup a vodka, run a couple times and let it set, then fill the reservoir and run it out.
