All the true nazis are dead. People pin all the blame on the only one's still alive.

""Prosecute for complicity in what you knew was being done in your workplace" is not the same thing as "burden with all the blame for the Holocaust". And let's not pretend that a two-year suspended sentence is some kind of show trial martyrdom.

von Braun wasn't a Nazi and didn't want to make weapons. They forced him to and he defected to america asap. he led the team that built the Saturn rockets.

also they still prosecuted a prison guard in 2022. 18 in 1945 would make you 95 years old today.

"167,284 of the 16 million Americans who served in World War II are alive in 2022."

so there are probably still 1000s of actual ww2 nazis still alive.

Because the older generation in Japan are stubborn as fuck and literally hold the country back in more ways than one.

This and sadly they're also the ones who run the politics in the country. Many of the younger generation basically own up to all of their war crimes in WW2.

He was Sturmbannfhrer in SS, which is equal to Major.

It would have been a disaster to let the knowledge they had go to waste. They weren't leading members of the SS and didn't take part in the Final Solution (although they did use slave labour) - this was probably enough for the Americans to shrug and go "I'd rather work with a Nazi than a Communist".

The western Allies already knew as the war was coming to a close that the next enemy was going to be the Soviet Union so to get as much of Germany's top scientists on their side would give them an advantage.
Should have gotten what we could out of them and then given them the noose. Just because you can be useful doesn't free you from the consequences of your actions.

By actual true nazi I mean someone who is like at least 30 or older. Not everyone in Germany was a member of the nazi party. Many of them were just normal people

I don't think a 17 year old girl who did paperwork, who probably was threatened with death if she didn't, is a true nazi.

People are acting like this teenager was in control of the camp

The everyday workings of the system, even one whose purpose was mass murder and torture, must have relied heavily on the compliance of many thousands of "ordinary Germans" rather than on an enthusiastic hardcore of the ideologically committed. The road to hell is signposted at regular intervals with "I'm just doing my job."

You didn't need to be an SS NCO, or even wear a Party badge, to fill out the bills of lading for shipments of Zyklon B to the gassing camps.

The modern talking point about the bombs having nothing to do with surrender is bizarre. If Japan refused the US' terms, that means they didn't surrender. SMH

You don't get to wage war on a massive pacific front and then dictate the terms of peace when you lose.

I think you can have an argument about procedural and strategic mistakes and bad motivations regarding the use of the bombs, but this whole thing about how Japan had already surrendered is complete bunk.

I mean there is something to that. But I still think you shouldn't so harshly punish someone who was a teenage nobody and was likely forced to work. I get that people are upset the real leaders are all dead and escaped punishment. But that doesn't mean you can vent your rage on this lady.

Why am I the only person who thinks this girl was going to be excuted if she refused to work? And maybe you could say an adult still should have refused, but she was still a child and scared

Because in all the many hundreds of postwar trials, defence attorneys have been unable to unearth a single documented case where someone was harshly punished for requesting a transfer to different duties or to a different workplace. Resistance doesn't have to take the form of outright refusal; evasion is also a form of resistance.

If you are a 17 year old girl, very far from home and working near the heart of the Nazi death machine, yes, it would take quite a lot of courage to ask to do a different job, or in a different location. And maybe the answer might have been, "No, we need you here" and all further discussion got shut down. But it simply wasn't true that no alternatives were ever possible.

She did get a two-year jail sentence, but suspended. She won't be spending any time in prison. It's possible that if her trial had taken place 30 years earlier, the story would have ended differently.
