I think this is all a bit tricky to get into the weeds with. Different regions can have different styles in regards to many different things. Where does bias end and criticism begin?

It does feel like there's some American nationalism there to me. But the fact that there's much less stigma in that term says a lot.

Honestly? Yes. Although depending on the game, it could be used as a fondness if it ends up being a signature style or remarkable aspect of the game.

A lot more Japanese devs are catching on to this recently, but yeah the amount of fanservice geared towards horny male teens is very apparent in a lot of older JRPG's.

A decade ago there was discourse over boss fights being outdated because popular Western games weren't very good at making them/were moving away from having boss fights. Which made it sound like they were just avoiding Japanese games that excelled at boss fights at the time.

I think that's what makes it a bit tricky. Eurojank really has its roots with PC gaming being more popular in Europe and the games they developed as a result of that. People who are into that aren't going to be bothered. AAA focused console gamers aren't going to be as into it.

I just find this all a bit tricky. A lot of gaming media is focused on the AAA cinematic and open world games for sure but so are the demographics of these sites.

When it comes to video games having preferences is pretty unavoidable.

I said eastern origin games tend to heavily skew towards the woman being fanservice. Especially the farther back in years you go.

Whether it's impractical gear that tends to be overly revealing, jiggle physics for the sake of jiggle physics, etc. Costumes definitely marketed towards horny guys.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but usually Eurojank applies to games made in central or East Europe, in which case that would be some sort of inherent bias against that.

Gene Park even mentions he's sure his peers don't have these biases on purpose. But you should recognize this stuff when it comes up, especially when it involves journalism or any career with substantial influence.

All Im gonna say is that Tales of Arise had amazing combat and a decent story, but the writing was so bad it was a slog to get through the game.

We dont need to balloon a simple statement into 15 sentences.

If the dialogue is bad in Japanese media published in English, then there's a decent chance it's not a writing problem, it's a translation/localization problem.

Granted the dialogue *could* just fucking suck but I feel like Ive seen a lot more relativley lazy, flavorless subtitles than Ive seen fundamentally flawed scripts.

There's also the case where the dialogue might actually sound weird because even if it looks fine in writing, most people don't actually talk like that. Though thats hardly exclusive to Japanese media. Believe Harrison Ford gave George Lucas some grief over that lol

A lot of this comes from there being a lack of a dev scene in some of those parts of the world. I seem to recall ZA/UM (or the Creative Collective at least) being the majority of the game dev enthusiasts in the entirety of Estonia, if I recall correctly.

In those areas, there's less of a community to bounce ideas off of, and as such some of the games coming out of the region can make some odd design choices.

Not surprised. They've been jealous ever since Nintendo averted The Crash with the NES and with how popular Japanese games were in the 90s and 2000s. Western devs and gaming companies are desperate to capture the minds of US and foreign gamers, but they can only seem to do it with uninspired games that promote gun worship, criminal activity, hate and negativity like GTA and COD. The large majority of Western devs don't got shit on the creativity and varied messages of Japanese devs. lol

To be fair, outside of major companies, most major game companies think it's a good idea to have an underage character have ZZZ cups with the highest voice and the most uncomfortable sexual innuendos and situations around so it makes sense.
