That was quick how fast Pele and Maradona have been knocked off the GOAT list as soon as Messi won World Cup.

Argentinian UFC Star says Lionel Messi is now comparable To Muhammad Ali

That's a really egocentric comment from him but I guess that's to be expected from a fighter. Are people just bored of comparing him to Maradona?

I think people are just excited because this is happening now.

For my two cents, there's not really much point in comparing things across generations that wide. I mean, pele played in an age when there were basically no cameras and the ball was like a bag of cement. Maradona played in an age where you could have a full time coke habit and still be at the top of the game, and a red card would only be awarded if you broke a limb.

What do we have now? A much more competitive, faster game, with way more sensitivity to rules, with every moment chronicled. In Maradona's age footballers from argentina grew up in the slums. In today's game they're handpicked almost as soon as they can walk.

On the other side of that coin, both muhammad ali and maradona share something in common with each other that Messi is not - they were incredible cultural figures outside of the sport as much as inside of it. Messi plays football and stays quiet. Maradona probably would have become a political revolutionary if he didn't end up as a footballer.
