When I get his health low, he keeps one-shotting me with attacks that didn't seem to do that much damage before.

He has a specific power-up that increases his damage. If you see him surrounded by a weird dark cloud, he's buffed. You can prevent this buff while he's charging it up by attacking him, so long as you can reach him quickly enough of course.

Got him on 18th try.

Yeah, I know about his power-up. I believe it gives him more stamina as well. I didn't know you could cancel it. Only thought you could sieze the moment and hit him a few times before he completes the charge.
