On the surface, it appears that artificial intelligence generated art could turn creative disciplines upside down. Everyday people can use programs like DALL-E, Midjourney, and Free AI Art Generator to create images like human portraits, and even recreate the aesthetics of directors like Wes Anderson. Despite whatever promise AI might show for generating art, many of those leading the entertainment industry remain skeptical. Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro has even weighed in on the debate, and described AI art as an insult to life itself, quoting renowned Japanese film director and animator Hayao Miyazaki.

I consume and love art made by humans. I am completely moved by that. And I am not interested in illustrations made by machines and the extrapolation of information, del Toro said in an interview with Decider. He went on to mention great artists, like Miyazaki and the English comic book artist and illustrator Dave McKean, who similarly voiced concerns or doubts over the capabilities of AI art.

Del Toro is the mind behind some of cinemas most fascinating and magical worlds. His most recent project is a reimagination of the fairy tale Pinocchio animated in stop-motion. Called Pinocchio, our Polygon review hailed the movie as one of the great works of stop motion, and is yet another touchstone in a remarkable career a career that AI art will very likely never play a part in.

It should be obvious. Anything ai generated will be a soulless amalgamation of stuff already created by humans.

I can't say I agree when "high art" praises the hell out of colored squares and shit.

Once the technology is putting out content on the same level as the average artist without blatantly pillaging from existing works, I couldn't really care less.

I disagree, and have a little beef with creatives, but it's going to take a good few years before the masses agree with me.

It's funny hearing the "it's just remixing art that already exists" line about AI when humans do the exact same thing. The difference is in the sources of inspiration. Artists didn't get offended until the AI got good enough. Before they'd just scoff at it, but now they seem genuinely afraid of it.

there's art and there's content. graphical ai just further commoditizes content.

artists can use ai as a tool to assist their creative workflow, as has been the case with non-ai forms of computer technology for decades including in del toro's own work, or they can take a more manual approach as is the case with more artistic traditionalists such as miyazaki.

the only people that really need be worried about ai are content creators, as distinguished from artists proper.

Artists: AI is bad
Also Artists: Let me use all these programs and apps to automatically enhance and "fix" my art or let me pump out copy/paste commissions swiftly

Creatives have always made fun of and belittled the book smart, so I have very little empathy.

This is just the latest attempt at bullying people who made something truly impressive.

"Good artists copy; great artists steal" - some guy

I'm not sure what the image you posted is supposed to represent. If it's the output of an art AI, all it proves is that the model made a bad result. This can be fixed through better training and modeling. Hell, human beings also steal and try to pass off creations as their own (not only whole works, but parts of works as well). There are plenty of examples of amazing original outputs from AI models.

Its like people forget that humans made the AI, so its still our art.
